Topics: Regression, inflation, patents ligitation, DRM-troubles, sound and recording copyrights (extended)...What else could you possibly ask from your global news frontline?
As well as anybody, the librarians also are finding DRM as harmful barrier in preserving the recorded music (to prevent the ever so precious archived recordings from shattering-to-dust). From an artists point of view, theres more important thigs going on: The long-awaited puff on the shoulder: Eurocrats (EC) have prolonged the actual copyrighted cashing period for recording artists from 50 to 90 yers - because poorly-paid performers are normally paid by percentage of sales and rarely "saw a dime over their session rate". In the time of straight-from-the-artist-to-copycats and dawn-of-the-monolithic-music-industry age we are reliefed with a notion, that "This is about the thousands of anonymous session musicians, who contributed to sound recordings in the late fifties and sixties. They will no longer get airplay royalties from their recordings, even though these royalties often contribute to their pension..." However CISAC (International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers)...said creators would end up with lower royalty payments than today. Basic learning from the story? Anyone?
...Meanwhile in a distant place, another established procedure is taken into consideration: that of patent system. We are given 3 conclusions on the topic: 1) the lawful patent litigations were on the rise at 1990s 2) Also (juridical) patent litigation costs were on the rise, except for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries 3) "Outside chemical and pharmaceutical industries, litigation costs for the average public firm actually exceed profits from their patent portfolio by a wide margin."(underlining mine - writers. note) The learning of the story? The legislation-jungle more rarely than often gives the defendants(the original creators of patents in question) any clue from unpredictable rules to decide who is the owner of patent legally, until they´ve spent millions on litigation process - except for areas like chem and pharm where these questions are more easily metered - The data discussed comes from various circles (in U.S. patent system), but we are also given notion that: "Banning software patents is a good short-term fix, but more fundamental reform is needed in the long run." But is something to change? Well... "The advice we got in the early 1980s was don´t even think about trying to patent software". In our limited knownledge (from patents) we but agree (and cite a famous unpublished memo): ("What a disaster patents would be for the software industry".:)
In the aftermath of the great mining disaster...In Zimbabwe the official inflation rate hits 2.2 million percent recently; translated to non-economical language this means (and prices may be even more by now as the ones mentioned are from behind some years...) 10334449976220 ZWD(Zimbabwe Dollar) [=263.032 €] for a pack of toilet papers, 24782853660000000 ZWD [630,529.41 €] for a Chicken and some 74348560980000000 ZWD [1,891,505.61 €] for a months rent (which might give a misleading idea that housing being a bit cheaper around there...the payroll also sounds as spectacular, but is mostly less than rent in numerical terms)... So worried that The Greatest Nation on Earth is at the rim of recession? Wonder if you should change for hybrid because can´t afford rising gas prices? Slight worries, because on 110 year perspective it seems that not everywhere the Great Depression (most wellknown the one in 1930s) yet ended: we conclude our postings in brief citate: "...hyperinflation has also caused a cash shortage because the government cannot print notes fast enough to meet demand" What a wonderful world...
