"All the names I know from nurse:
Gardener's garters, Shepherd's purse,
Bachelor's buttons, Lady's smock,
And the Lady Hollyhock.

Fairy places, Fairy things,
Fairy woods where the wild bee wings,
Tiny trees for tiny dames.
- These must all be Fairy names !"

(from Child's Garden of Verses
by R.L. Stevenson)

"Anyone can write a short-story.
A bad one, I mean."

"In the high society of the first half of the century, marriage, despite it's bestowal status upon the wife, was the most absurdity. Marriage, conferring instanteous rank or money, ... lost most of its prestige and moment right after the wedding. ...By the end of the century, spurred by Rousseau's moralistic Nouvelle Hèloíse, a contrary cult, that of virtue, arose. After 1770 conjugal and maternal love became not merely admissible, but, for some, moral imperatives. ...

[...]
...Rousseau, who sought for himself the crown of morality in ostensibly defending marriage, presents in his Nouvelle Hèloíse the most enticing and extended defense of illicit love ever penned. The root of the problem is that as the century progressed sensibility became confused with morality: passionate feeling, if expressed in a highly civilized mode with grace and nuance, makes us forgive the Rousseau of The Confessions, for example, his pettiness, his jealousies, his betrayals. This moral-amoral byplay, present already in the novels of Richardson, was to be more intense as the century unfolded."

"...As the social contract seems tame in comparison with war, so fucking and sucking come to seem merely nice, and therefore unexciting. ... To be 'nice', as to be civilized, means being alienated from this savage experience - which is entirely staged. [...] The rituals of domination and enslavement being more and more practiced, the art that is more and more devoted to rendering their themes, are perhaps only a logical extension of an affluent society's tendency to turn every part of people's lives into a taste, a choice; to invite them to regard their very lives as a (life) style." - Susan Sontag , on 'Fascinating Fascism' (-74; p 103;104-5 at Under the sign of Saturn)

"It is sometimes said that humanity is at war with nature, but the word 'war' implies a two-way conflict. Our chemical onslaught on nature is more akin to genocide. It is small wonder that our wildlife is in decline."

Muleskinner Book recommendations #2

Our latest book recommendation is from the area of knownledge we are, must confess, purely amateurs (meaning that at the most delightful way) - Egyptology. The book in recommendation [The Pyramids of Egypt by I.E.S. Edwards, Penguin books 1987 ed.] is also rather old(1st ed. was published in 1947), so facts and foundings are perhaps (most likely) not necessary valid according to the recent research from archeological field concerning ancient Egypt. So whats worth raising it to the podium on our blog? Well, most everything...

The book is first of all accompanied with a respectful list of drawings from pyramids, mastabas, construction manners, details to make it understandable and easily readable (you can see some pictorial drawings from it here). The history and factoids are also described interestingly (though I cannot remember details, its years since I´ve read it...). In surplus to that theres a 48-page black-and-white pictorial insert .

An informative companion for a tourist, grave-robber(hope your not!) or just for someone to read from curiosity. The drawings are most exiciting, sometimes depictorials from constructions base-structures, sometimes delightfully rich as pictoring the structural details from buildings. Many are showing tunnels tombs and/or burial chambers inside Pyramids and as such useful for anyone visiting places (of course only a small number of pyramids around are taken to notice in book, but also, for understandable reasons most of the tombs included in books texts are not even available for public visitors).

The contents is divided somewhat according to ancient Egypt dynasties (Old, Middle and Late Kingdom periods), but as the building of pyramids actually mostly took place in the first period mentioned there´s relatively little from other types of later burial building. Still, a couple chapters devoted to them too. Let´s see...for one who likes (the book), most propably it should be available online at Google´s book search service (as its that dated...) Enjoyable reading!

Newspost#130708

This weeks topics range from the "Null G8-conference" to phone comparisons and the "shocking" theatrical concerts manouvers from Madonna and Britney, not as something new but at least they´re not claiming to be...shocking? Also included more on palm oil and reasons for eating healthy food, as beneficial for mental health...(not to forget mentioning: next newspost to be expected after a week or so, in the meantime we have some articles here...)

Taking the aim at phone bullies...Our quick comparison of the candites challenging Iphone gave as result prices ranging from, say 190,- € to 611,- € (we were not able to find pricing for each one, but...) enough to keep the (smart)phones miles away from the pockets of pennywise, regular user. Also, Iphone at least looks still better outward than most of these. Concerning the phones as 3G-alternatives underlines the fact that good looks and smartness don´t usually go hand in hand. From the phones top ten compared only HTC Diamond gains some points in design and looks (Also O2 XDA Orbit 2 was worth mention, merely being more simply stylish looking than most). On actual results Nokia did comparatively well scoring 3 phones among the seven most valued...We only wonder whether any of these would make much better as the greenwashed 3g-Iphone, recently noticed containing toxins and Phtlanxas(or whatever...) as chemicals used in parts?

On the renewal energy-sources we find that new techniques could finally help the breakthrough on solar energy production. Based on cheap production and better use of cells, solar panels can produce energy and heat more efficient (with the techniques invented already at 1970s, made effective not until recent times...) The technology could be "...in production within three years." California is told taking the solar energy in serious use and hoeps to gain 20% of its own energy needs from renewable energy sources like solar by 2017. This could be as good news as any, but we are a bit skeptic as remembering that solar energy was the futuristic energy source already at the good old 1950´s in most visionary and optimistic futuristic dreams...

Now, with the new version of Google Earth, one part time tourist can save the effort of traveling and go web-sightseeing any town interested...Just take a search on Youtube videos and find g-maps from the city in sight, then change for the G-Earth, give a brief look for the actual architectural landscape recreated in 3D-view, then dive for street view (if available) from camera points available. As well as that, if interested, even use variable microblogging sources or social nets if wish to check out restaurants, events etc. What a huge savings in touristic pollution and also on other environmental and transportative perspectives!

Wish(?) to check the news(feed), motherlode of all the important information.
