Gardener's garters, Shepherd's purse,

Tiny trees for tiny dames.
- These must all be Fairy names !"

"In the high society of the first half of the century, marriage, despite it's bestowal status upon the wife, was the most absurdity. Marriage, conferring instanteous rank or money, ... lost most of its prestige and moment right after the wedding. ...By the end of the century, spurred by Rousseau's moralistic Nouvelle Hèloíse, a contrary cult, that of virtue, arose. After 1770 conjugal and maternal love became not merely admissible, but, for some, moral imperatives. ...

[...]
...Rousseau, who sought for himself the crown of morality in ostensibly defending marriage, presents in his Nouvelle Hèloíse the most enticing and extended defense of illicit love ever penned. The root of the problem is that as the century progressed sensibility became confused with morality: passionate feeling, if expressed in a highly civilized mode with grace and nuance, makes us forgive the Rousseau of The Confessions, for example, his pettiness, his jealousies, his betrayals. This moral-amoral byplay, present already in the novels of Richardson, was to be more intense as the century unfolded."

MuleSkinner book recommendations #4:

Fyodor Dostoevsky:

The Idiot

It´s hard to imagine a more serious novel than Fyodor Dostoevsky's The Idiot on questions of true christianity and principal purposes for humanity. Dostoevsky is often renowned as the creator of modern psychological roman, but The Idiot also targets on questions arising from human belief-systems, the search (of human kind) for religious, existential and ethical ideals. In fact, The Idiot was the first of his lenghty works, focusing on under surface depths of human mind as well as uncertainties in the given social order. At the time of publication (1869) it wasn´t accepted generally well, when compared to Tolstoys War and Peace, but afterwards the book has gained in respect. All this naturally makes it one of Dostoevskys most remarkable works, well-deserving its place among the other such ambitious novels like The Possessed (1872) and The Brothers Karamazov (1880).

The Idiot could also be described, at least to certain level, as an experimental laboratory on themes later fulfilled in Dostoevskys magnum opus, Brothers Karamazov. In spite of that, this is mainly a novel from prince Myshkin. The main character is presented as good-willing, illusionary example of human person. As consequence, the ever-idealistic Myshkin soon finds himself often as laughed but pitied, more or less a curiosity in upper class social life circles he's entering to. He also suffers from epilepsy which is also strongly connected to princes character (the novel contains a passage describing him suffering an epileptic seizure). Myshkin, the eternal walker in sunshine, the passenger on lighter side of one way street (of humanity), also has his counterpart. Thats Rogozhin, introduced and described in somewhat darker tones. Rogozhin presents princes total opposite: He is capable to evil deeds and frightening violent acts. In this manner, his presence balances the human ideals presented in Myshkins persona. Naturally there´s also a woman, Nastasya Filippovvna, much in sight of both men.

Books have been written from the reasons for birth of that spesific form of narration; russian 19th century realistic novel, which in content and form is far superior to the contemporary english and american efforts. After all, Russia had just years before moved on from feaudal serf bondage society (lasted as late as 1861) in towards the more modern state. Therefore it is, of course striking, that Idiot is mainly a novel from upper-class people. Dostojevsky's writing omits the poor peasants and the former serfs to the level that one could sometimes errate to think there weren´t any in russian society at the time (a point sometimes mentioned when comparing Dostoevskys realism to Tolstoys). However, the word Dostojevsky had most keen interest was not realistic, but fantastic. As firm believer in tzarist order, he propably never even considered class society questions as of importance, and besides, spent and wrote large parts of his life in foreign European nations. As a result, one finds that in Dostoevskys religious views the christianity is presented within the duality in human. Dualism being an important area also in psychology, Dostoevsky is often counted among its forefathers. But, his dualism is somewhat different in nature as its based on Christian faith and simultaneously in interest for demonic depths of human mind. Dualism, of course is much older in origin, even as a technique of characterization used in modern literature fiction.

The Idiot, in itself, is typical social drama, a serie of acts culminating to the unavoidable result. As mentioned, in more deeper level its a continued questioning in search of good humanity, and as such, propably more credible to christian ideals than the christianity itself. Thats basically so, because Dostoyevskys prose acknownledges the capability for pure evil in human personal (thats the question most common in his works, continuosly repeating in his novels, as is often reminded too). The illusions from ideals of humanity, and also Christ as such ideal, are reflected in the Prince Myshkins characters, the idiot. But Myshkins idealistic character would not truly exist without Rogozhins shadow on him, kind of a mirror-like contrast to his. By the way, similar characteristic interplay, created between Corto Maltese(though, he can not be depicted quite as idiot, but idealist) and Rasputin in Hugo Pratts comics could be a straight loan from The Idiot.

Taking books themes in deeper examination would be of frustrating and unnecessary. So I'll just mention that any person under age of 25 years would benefit significantly from reading it. Older ones...shouldn´t miss it either, though its plain idealistic tone can sometimes be a bit harder to cope with in case of someone with more (life-)experience. Anyway, we recommend this for anybody interested in world literature history classics and/or the emotional and psychological roots of russian 19th century society. In fact, according to my experience it might the best book to get acquainted with Dostoevkys ingenious art-of-words.

Newspost#240808

This week we are again pushing technological inventions a bit foreground, as we cannot keep from commenting the minilaps (expectable) market shares. As receiving the news from the emerging drive for an oil production super-power, Brazil and its improved sustainable (non deforestative) food production, we almost get the impression that it already jumped among the (most) developed world countries without having to take along the stressing unequality, poverty problems etc. Leapfrogging? Perhaps not, but more on that below...

The ever more important, scarce natural resource: water. As within climate change effects on global environmental and weathers far more countries are facing scarcity of fresh sweet water. Remembering that desalination (of sea water) has been a discussed topic for number of decades, it is a bit surprising that efficient ways to get drinkable water out of Oceans are yet to develop. At least use of them in large-scale is at its beginnings. Typical is, that one sole nation where this kind of desalination process is effectively used, happens to be Saudi-Arabia, rich, deserted nation at middle-east. Main problem in developing desalination systems has been the problems in creating energy-efficient techniques. In time this is propably solvable problem but whether it will be available to every place where needed especially developing countries, is a bit more complicated question...However, from advances in that area, we are informed from a proposition by Desertec, which has created trans-mediterranean plan for the effective use of solar from Sahara and wind energy to produce renewable electricity for power consumption and seawater desalination in the area. Several other efforts will be propably needed as, according to WWF, 97.5 of waters is salt water and portion available fresh water to drink and fx agricultural use only makes total of 1 percentage. Though, "Even this tiny proportion, however, would be enough for humans to live on earth if the water cycle was properly functioning and if we managed our water use wisely"

As concerning definitions of leapfrogging, one can check that at Wikipedia fx...or you can (dis)satisfy for our short explanation: ...means for the developing world countries to pass by mostly all from the developed worlds misdeeds and wrong-doings and messings on pollutative, environmental wasteful and expensive technology for energy/production techologies from past century and half... and to jump straight to the age of renewable energies and resources with new solutions.” In practise this means... for the developing countries its not just question of willingness to go greenish, because on many areas they actually have to; the existing (traditional, old) resources and energy sources are often becoming too expensive and hard to obtain for them. Not to mention the oil prices, some countries that posses large oil founds (like Brazil) can possibly rely on international companies need for suppliers, but in many other places more long-term solutions are searched. So, there are actually a lot of examples from alternative energy projects in the developing countries; geothermal energy in Kenya, not-to-mention China, which along with the greatest (in quantity) greenhouse gas emissions, is also already the leading renewable energy producer in world. Not-to-mention our quick search on solar from IEAs(International Energy Agency) Global Renewable Energy database which informs from a number of projects/plans, mostly North-American and European, but also South-Africa, Brazil, Mexico, India, Cook Islands, Uganda, Korea (Republic of), and - again - China.

As we've noticed Bit-torrent is pushed just about everywhere: integrated clients to browsers, hacks for different kinds of devices, torrent-friendly digi boxes, most lately we find, there's now D-Link DNS-323 networking Wlan with bittorrent downloading and media playing options. Straight from web to TV/PC/whatever the screen, why not?

What comes to more mainstream (yet) devices we are little bit less critical on minilaps actual technical capabilities. After all, launch of these machines (not much than year ago or so) began along with the campaigns for One Laptop Per Child project(with XO laptop), intended to bring cheap, greenish laptop as literacy learning companion for kids in developing countries. Along with that, of course, there's large new profitable markets (in target of) manufacturers. So why not make these devices (they decided) for western markets too and to guarantee the profits in the future, make first round everywhere with relatively insufficient capabilities (in the long run). So, now from reviews we find that new Acer Aspire (A110), apparently designed for the '2nd gen buyers' buyers, is a bit more promising portability tool; in addition to 8 Gb FlashMem it has SD-slot(in fact two of em) for storage increase of (supposed) 32 Gb which is seamlessly integrating to the total memory. For OS a Linux-based launcher can be chosen(and you can change that for Ubuntu, if wish so), according to test only the battery was less than convincing, because it didn't last even for watching the whole 1.5 h movie. So...some 280 € (not including the price of SD-mem enlargement) for Wifi-connection and possibility to use Linux? Alas, from manufacturers page we learn that the 8.9 inch screen comes with the adequate but not very satisfactory 262.000 colors and no bluetooth either... besides, its propably not very much ROHS-free product either as there´s no mention about it. So...all the promising details considered, we'll not at all convinced this should be raised on pedestal as the latest wonder.

However, if one now choose´s to get one subnotebook, there´s available alternative for OS,( recommended for experienced users with some coding experience only, though) Ubuntu Netbook Remix (from Canonical), based on Ubuntu Mobile Edition and especially designed for subnotebooks(as these incidentally choiced little remarks here tell): ”...to deliver a superb user experience while making it simple and cost-effective for device manufacturers to be able to bring their devices to the consumer marketplace," , although: ”...there is no word yet about potential commercial adopters for the Netbook Remix.”, but, ”[That]...so many users are installing the regular desktop version of Ubuntu on their Eee laptops is strong indication that there is demand for Ubuntu on subnotebooks.” Sure, why not?

Of considerable notion is (also) that mobile firefox is now better supported in portabilities (such as phones) within Nokias Maemo as well as on several KDE-based Linux UIs.

(We are again) reminded from the dubious nature of sports: in gymnastics, some girl-athletes were presumably under 16, the current age limit. That being so(?) we only recall the cheerful days of Nadia Comanecis total tens; According to our memory (could be wrong...) the rules were changed for the reason she being at the time 14, and at the time everybody was clapping hands and smiling, but now ”the fireworks weren´t real either...” (BBC WorldNews Podcast, 12/08 PM). So, in the openning TV-watchers witnessed somewhat modified spectacle (but just in the name of Olympic spirit)...Other topics: Charles asks for a halting the genetic food disaster...Naturally any food production aiming to profit on markets with products that are for basic human needs (such as hunger) is but dubious, as well as most often untasty (kind of food). Luckily, the tactics seen so far have guaranteed that: ”consumers in Europe do not want to eat GM food...”

The great big... company made recently an announced on starting a blog for the first steps of its new happy family member, called E7 (or was it already named Vienna in some instance, I heard the name leaked out someplace). We, here at the MSW of course stay on tune as much as anybody else and welcome this act of openness as much promising as the rumours from (possible) planning stage of Midori, the next generation OS successsor for Windows, bringing (possibly) better flexibility and communicativity with other Oss and apps. No hard feelings, after all these years without noteworthy competitor its hard to even imagine the kind of computing would have been without the success of Windows. Perhaps something like A.Huxleys BNW excluding the totalitaric use of pleasuredome relaxants.

Not just hightechs, biotechs or knuckle-heads: they say nanotechnology is slowly but surely making its way towards the public revelation (on the level of really applicable creations). The grief for ever smaller, futuristics particles for devices is apparent, as ”optical lithography methods are rapidly approaching their fundamental limits.” Now, we are informed that with the new ways(lets not go to details too precisely...) to manipulate block copolymers even ”feature sizes below 20 nanometers are possible” and the traditional inherent size limitations can be circumvented. The actual experimental use of miniaturization in microelectronics is to take some five-to-ten years more because of other barriers...but what this all means? Ipod in the size of pinhead? But how do I plug in the headphones(do I have to, actually)? Is there alternative technical solutions for expectable miniaturization? I bet not. Besides, other instance (of science) has succesfully found ways to make things invisible. True, in spite of that the actual solutions are of course within...X years they have succeeded in making the light(rays?) circumventing the surface of particular thing. Now...what if I lose the pinhead and forget the invisibility switcher on? No need to worry, of course its connected to main station and can be geolocated...but if there's some failure on signal or certain inpenetrable material blocks the connection? Do I need to take insurance on this device also (won´t possibly cost but half the enormous price of the actual device...)

On forestry and biofuels field we find that ”The future for the orangutans is in the hands of the humans now”. As for due to palm oils increased demand, the price raises and soforth, forest go under cuttings. The extinct has been predicted to be of immediate threat as soon as 2015 (!). If that could be avoided, there seems to be no lack of alarm signs apparently everywhere else as well, yet there´s some steps forward too: there are now standards on Sustainable Palm Oil and Forests preservation to fight back further deforestation. Alarming threats in little longer in foresight also as more from worlds (rain)forests go under cuttings. But, (numbers from Treehugger citing the RRI-report) who´s to blame for an additional 515 million hectares of worlds forests needed under axe ´til 2030 for the food and consumption ?(and because of population increase in the next 20 years even more will be needed mostly just to feed the people in (under)developed countries)...Agriculturalists? Farmers? The poor people? No, we think its the biofuels (1st generation most apparently, from the claimed sustainability of the 2nd gen. we yet have not any proofs), the most immediate new misused invention since the fossil fuels...And meanwhile... somebody dreams from faking the catchery of Bigfoot(s)(well, when asked for making profit from it, answered: "as much as we can..."!?) Yes, we all are most blessed to live these exiting world wide mass-communication times when nothing dreadful really seems to be happening until afterwards noticed(remember the spectacular TV-wars most recently, predicted genetic paradise lands and most of all the newest do-it-yourself TV-series for the ecologically-minded(last one don´t add much to deforestation, does it?).
