"In the high society of the first half of the century, marriage, despite it's bestowal status upon the wife, was the most absurdity. Marriage, conferring instanteous rank or money, ... lost most of its prestige and moment right after the wedding. ...By the end of the century, spurred by Rousseau's moralistic Nouvelle Hèloíse, a contrary cult, that of virtue, arose. After 1770 conjugal and maternal love became not merely admissible, but, for some, moral imperatives. ...

[...]
...Rousseau, who sought for himself the crown of morality in ostensibly defending marriage, presents in his Nouvelle Hèloíse the most enticing and extended defense of illicit love ever penned. The root of the problem is that as the century progressed sensibility became confused with morality: passionate feeling, if expressed in a highly civilized mode with grace and nuance, makes us forgive the Rousseau of The Confessions, for example, his pettiness, his jealousies, his betrayals. This moral-amoral byplay, present already in the novels of Richardson, was to be more intense as the century unfolded."

Newspost#12102008

Our newsfeed being less orderly maintained during last month, we're almost short of new information. However that doesn't prevent us from giving our opinions on some of the ongoing trends. As the techs sector has reached forward during our holiday seasons we focus on catching the missed progression and Gargantuan steps taken meanwhile, and therefore this sunday sermon is devoted to the technological frontends of home-computing. Most space is given to Google's Chrome-browser, though.

The innumerable pedias: Having got so used to the handiness of Wikipedia(WP), you don't always remember that there's plenty of companion alternatives and Wiki-Offshoots (just to save time, we're briefly citing other instances here:): Scholarpedia ”...is written by, you guessed it, scholars. Experts must be either invited or elected before they are assigned certain topics and, although the site is still editable by anyone like a wiki, updates must first be approved before they are made final.” Conservapedia ”...is a conservative, Christian-influenced wiki encyclopedia that was created as a response to Wikipedia's alleged left-wing bias. The information found on this site is free of foul language, sexual topics and anything else deemed offensive by the site's editorial staff.” (sounds humorous? Read further:) Uncyclopedia ”...is an ambitious spoof of Wikipedia. It could be seen as an over-the-top response to Wikipedia users, also knows as "Wikipedians", who seem to take everything too seriously.” (...But wait, it gets better:) Micropedia Microsofts own internal WP, cataloging every person and project within company (there's also a Polish project by same name which is about Micronations, from Redmonds Micropedia see this article). Naturally there's similar pedias at almost every smaller or larger (net-)companies. More a norm than exception these days. Then there's at least Animalpedia...from the animals of course, seems to be updated somewhat infrequently and there´s plenty more text from animals in original WP ...Chickipedia...from chicks, mostly...Music pedia, smaller project, possibly fading and no wonder as every other artist seems to be reviewed at WP too...and who knows what other encyclopedic projects. (...But wait, it gets even better:) You can also actually pay real amounts of cash for the joy of building your own (company's) WP's with the help PBWiki. For a medium and/or larger entrepreneur this can be even real useful solution considering the time and effort the maintainance of any pedia takes. Luckily, these days all is at net, otherways they would offer help for gathering your own (company's) encyclopedias with indexing and printing services too... but wasn't it quite recently when you were told to make the leadership understand that actually its for company's benefit if the worker decides to start writing internal blogs and wiki's?

Unavoidable for us to avoid commenting Googles Chrome, but we don't make this for full article as might have been the temptation at first glance. Instead here's a quick commentary mainly because the browser seems to be very well reviewed and discussed elsewhere and we don´t propably have much to add (and, strangely little information on its development and later fixes seems to be available for us here at MSW). If wish to read more, check out the links included below our comments at end of this text.

At first look, the window and panel feels comfortably similar to Firefox, with some new spices added. Notably, the web-address bar is taken in use as searchbar also (can be changed to use other engines than Googles own, too). Useful, but not that amazing. Also the incognito mode, we find as usable but not much revolutionary invention. Then there's the Task manager, and that we find more than improvement as user can now check the actual consumption of resources by different tabs (web apps) open at the time. Somewhat curiously, bookmarks and rss-features have been omitted from Chrome, obviously as though unnecessary. The most important improvement, however, is the handling of tabs; Chrome uses each tab as individually opened web-window separately (and safely apart) from each other. This is real improvement which might likely get adopted by others too.

Then again, noticing the apparent similarities to Firefox, one also stops to think that actually much of this modestyness is propably only some glittering loan. But also, Googles apparent main target, the mobile phones interferences might have been taken into consideration as Chrome's overall details have been polished for a little lighter appearance. This makes sense, and actually the browser seems to perform very fast and very smoothly (yet, Ffox oncoming versions are promised to perform JScript as fast; again, see the links below). Still, we cannot but wonder if these qualities are worth the features missing: that is, the many so efficient and delicate little extensions that make Mozillas main flag-carrier the ultimate winner (and they promise you can get the mobile version these days too), the balanced beauty of general appearance and the many little improvements. The latter will necessary have to be carried on Chrome before it could be noted as notable challenger on browser markets. But, in simplicity and with developing it might gain a following at least among Google's die-hard fans. And besides, there's certain quality in the simplicity of Chromes outlook.

So, as we understand the situation, the only real question is, whether Google is ready to give up from tactics of trying to push its own web-services into every place (fx via browser), instead giving green lights for alternative available choices for every imaginable uses like Firefox does. Most likely, in time Chrome will get free from beginnings childish diseases and perhaps there's still place for another browser on markets, so ...lets see. But, mentioning other similar trendy projects at the same deal, there's also Mozilla's Prism (the Ffox extension version became recently available too). And it does quite the same what is drummed as Chrome's most charming improvement: Serves as an straight web-window to wanted web-address/-program, directly from users (PC:s) desktop. But they say its available only on Windows which sounds but strange...

Not much familiar with Google's Gears, we are not to say if Chrome makes better usability for (Google's) so called cloud-applications, but that could be. In any case, it makes way for the new attitude and ways for webbing. Whether this is sufficient reason to take a ride on Chrome, depends on users needs and likings. But we suggest people also check carefully the articles listed below, too. Just for curiosity.

Finally, Can browser really change a world? Not in my lifetime, but it helps to make it better. So, lets just be satisfied with that (so far).

-------

(Normally, there's at least three main subjects on our news, but due to MSW -world situation, this week the last one is filled with silence :(

...And So the Dice was Cast.

Some time ago, we entertained you with a pic of a chair. Then with a self-binded book. Here's another pictorial intermission: The Dice.

Sometimes, if you consider things carefully, you might be reminded from the words spoken by an old country blues artist: "Whenever your mind tells you to do something, don't do it. Think twice sometimes. But if you still think your mind tells you that you can do something ...don't do it. Cause the temptation always beats the words of wisdom, every time." (don't remember the phrases exactly, but the idea is basically the same) .

Notice that there's also numbers 2 and 6 in sight on the dice.

Fair- and Eco-labels

As any vigilant observer might easily have noticed, our Sustainable Production Abbreviative Directory contains a lot rather complex terms. In spite of its usefulness, in many ways, most of those terms are quite rarely needed in everyday shopping. So, we decided to give some space for most common eco-labels too, or, shall we say: some regular labels of fair/sustainable production a common consumer most often (and easily) can recognize at markets.

So here's a few generally renown labels (pics have our own short informative side-by texts within). Most of these are used for provisions labelling (and more or less available even here at Muleskinner World), but we've added some other fields of production too. Also there exists spesified labelling fx for organically manufactured and chemicals free textiles.

Fair Trade Label; Maintained by The International Fair Trade Association (IFAT), the FTO Mark identifies the stuffs produced by fair trade organizations worldwide. The production is monitored to fullfill certain criteria. Briefly, the label guarantees that the products producers in developing countries receive fair share of trade, but also that working conditions are foreseen to meet the standards (as well as wages), no child labor used and the production is carried out environmental friendly. Certification itself is done by an independent international certification company. FLO-CERT GMBH is responsible for the inspection and certification of producer organisations and traders against the Fairtrade Standards.

Over 150 organizations are registered as Fairtrade Certified Producers. This is propably the most well-known eco/fairshare label. The label in picture has been in use since 2004, products are often also recognizable for a characteristic packing too. FLO-homepage. FLO-CERT Gmbh.

Rainforest Alliance Certified; Easily recognizable for the frog. Originally US-based, Rainforest Alliance is a non-governmental organization, aiming (ao) to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. Based on 1987, the Rainforest Alliance launched a worlds first sustainable forestry certification program in 1989. It also participated in creation of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), a non-profit organization that promotes responsible forest management worldwide.

RA-label, similarly as FTO, is meant to improve sustainable production and responsibly produced goods in developing countries. RA works both with small and larger companies worldwide. However, according to our understanding, the production is not as stricktly organically carried as compared to Fair Trade Association standards. On the other hand, the Rainforest Alliance also has other programs to see that the ecological needs are considered, like their sustainable forestry program, and also similar projects for more ecological agriculture and tourism exist. Rainforest Alliance-homepage.

MSC ecolabel; Principally a global environmental standard for sustainable and well-managed fishing. It is maintained by independent non-profit organization Marine Stewardship Council. The blue MSC ecolabel in fish packaging, should guarantee that the fishery operates in an environmentally responsible way and doesn't increase the global environmental problem of overfishing. Basically, the mark also should indicate that the supply chain from fishing boat to point of sale ensures that seafood sold bearing the ecolabel originated from an MSC certified fishery. Greenpeace has sometimes criticized MSC-labelling for too low standards, but anyway its propably the most renown eco-fishery mark.

The MSC was founded in 1997 by the World Wide Fund for Nature and Unilever, but has since become fully independent. Marine Stewardship Council-webpage.

ROHS label; Mostly used in computer and high-tech products (these standards apply to household electronics and lightning equipments too, fx), ROHS is a marking to indicate that the device/product in question meets the standards for removal of hazardous chemicals from production. European Union directives (RoHS) for this labeling doesn't generally guarantee that the product would necessary be environmentally otherways "better". Fx, as energy-efficiency concerned, there's different standards like Energy Star program.

ROHS principally guarantees that the product which falls into category, doesn't contain most poisonous toxics (= they are substituted for safer alternatives.) Until 2007 ROHS free products should have became more standard than exception, but so far we quite rarely see that marking (here at MSW, at least). So, we are not aware if these criterias are actually achieved, in reality. As the EU directives concerned, most recent information can be found from this British information site (among other places). Greenpeace publishes around every quarter a year The Green Electronics Survey (it is available as Pdf to download), which gives much of an up-to-date knowledge from current situation in greener electronics (and ICT).

There also seems to be some variety in ROHS-labels, the text is sometimes differently printed, color differs, etc. We've chosen this one as its propably close to the official one (if there is some).

On eco-textiles labelling there may be different kind of labels in use, and in fact, one can check for more information also on other labels mentioned on Ecologist web-magazine. So we just list some most common in use here and include some basic information. You can read more on them elsewhere if wish so.

The Institute for Marketecology (IMO) is one general instance most renown among the certification of eco-friendly and organically produced goods, especially textiles. They have the GOTS(Global Organic Textile Standard - No pic here, you can check the IMO-site for more details) -certification to ensure textils organic origin, that fx should guarantee the product to be free from usage of chemicals. They also announce standard for organic textiles to cover the production, processing, manufacturing, packaging, labelling, exportation, importation and distribution of all natural fibres (in the final product). It has two sub-labelling: 1) 95 per cent from fibres originate to certified organics (remaining 5 may be synthetic etc. needed in manufacturing process), 2) 70 to 95 per cent originate from certified organics, remaining 30 may be non-organic in origin.

From the more locally used labels The European Eco-Label (flower) is in use on most non-food products (including textiles). It takes on consideration a wide variety of topics in the products whole life-cycle and is therefore quite reliable sign of 'greener product'. Different countries may have their own national markings, like German Blaue Angel and Nordic Swan included below. Also, pictured below, the oeko-tex standard label. Typically, it guarantees that the products manufacturing is free from use of human harmful chemicals, but not that its supply chain would be in any manner free from deprivation economics(= may be produced in sweat shops, fx).

...And for an additional information here's (below) also the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) label, propably best guarantee (in many cases) from the products safety for worlds forests. Also, as the pic is from partly recycled paper-origin, here's presented also the 3R-logo, often included in packaging when materials used originate from different sources. There's basically (in papers) two more specific markings under tree-logo; Recycled, when its made completely from used materials. Another (Mixed Sources) must contain at least 70 per cent of material from recycled paper of FSC-certified forestry (no guarantee from the origins of the remaining 30 per cent, it seems likely...)

Subsequently, here some links to organic food producers; (Label left, is of british organic foods labeling, there's several around, in some countries more than one, and some companies may sometimes also have their own, so this one here just as an example...)

UrteKram -
Danish well-known organic food supplier (other products as well)

Clipper - Teas (they also have organic teas...other products as well)

Biona/
Windmill Organics
- Seems to have also some (Fairtrade) products under the BioFair-label

Green and Blacks - Another british comp. (they've got fx fair trade cocoa and various forms of chocolate available, also receipts in their pages...)

As much as we have the most current knownledge, the green renewable revolution for energy production in China (we last week mentioned it among the renewable programs in developing countries) has most urgent need to be carried on, too. Looking at the video-clip from Linfen, presumably the most polluted city in the world(as a result from charcoal production, consumption) is like to dive into the baddest imaginable smog day in some other big city center, only this is the normal state, each day...As of happier (kind of) news we now find that with QR codes you can insert articles (as pdf, fx) within Google-maps for further informative notions from certain geolocative place. You can even view them with mobile phone. But what should these texts contain? Fx;? ...The place is ...most amazing, relaxing beach where bikinis dressed charming ladys offer you Pina Coladas...or...most polluted, lungs endangering area, beware of smokestack inhaling...wide variety of several wild animal spices like small mouses and several of more persistent insects...

Now you can even watch and publish your (own created) pictorials as 3D with Microsoft Photosynth, and from some other projects of considerable merit, we have picked a news brief that Firefox's next milestone (3.1) is to give browsing experience a significant performance boost with better (java)scripts handling and technique (tracemonkey, the new technique in question, which is advertised, to do scripts coding ready even before the browser is to be driving them, giving some 20-40 times faster speeds). In considering online image- and/or videoediting the benefits are remarkable, although the results will propably be not quite as overwhelming when in actual use.

The weather...is apparently getting cooler, at least for the 2008, year being now observed as the coolest in decade. Due to scientists its mainly because La Nina, part of the natural (climatic) cycle in the Pacific that includes El Nino(Niño, exactly)-phenomenom cooling the world globally. Yet "2008 will still be significantly above the long-term average". As for the complete picture, the causes for phenomenom are "not fully understood, but an important factor is the strength of the prevailing trade winds that blow from east to west across the equatorial Pacific.". What is known, resulting climatic affects include drenching rains over South America (east Pacific) and droughts conditions in Indonesia in the west Pacific. Effects of them also not too unfamiliar these days.
As for how much this is a matter of human actions or not is not as easily defined, but for that human activities can have alarming effects (on nature) we find the surprising explanation for the loss of bees...yes, where are the bees? A question often repeated recently, we don't know most repeated answer. Well, according to german lawsuit its the Baeyr CropScience (producing
imidacloprid and clothianidin containing pesticides, whose risks have actually been known for ten years). Human created toxins exterminated bees? Yes they did, according to Julius Kuhn institute (aka German Federal ministry of food, agriculture and consumer protection) clothianidin caused the deaths of some 11 000 bee colonies. But ...killed a whole populations of insects and besides could be the cause for reduced honey production for some 60 percentage in US alone? Yes indeed, and if one is to believe that, we can as well suppose that quite likely they didn't much consider if the toxins possibly could have any other long-term effects, like for the bee-products eating humans, (possibly)you and me... But how come not any earlier toxins didn't have the same effect as most kind of poisons has been tried as insect-killers? Answer (again)propably is that nobody knows for sure, but... the reports state that the company's pesticides concided with large scale bee deaths. So, either way, even if there would be little exaggeration or not, the result remains alarming...90 billion bee deaths. As a direct cause for mass-annihilation proven to be true, no human actions as the main reason cannot be necessary excluded...But still, where are the bees? Whats happened to them? (Bayer paid about $3 million in damages)

In the Soviet Union, noticeably the most ambitious society/communal idealistic project of the past century, was also carried out obscure geology projects like digging deep into Earths core, including the deepest human created drilling hole to date. Project was continued some 15 years (beginning in 1960/2) to reach a record that has never been broken. All was done allmost just in the name of science, since the economic uses of the information gained was limited. But thats just as Sovjetal as one could imagine, keeping in mind that Sovjet Union was a nation whose birth originated alongside with a creation a numerous places for enprisonment camps (Archipelago Gulag as Solzhenitsyns famous book named them. Gulags (again, for more on that, see Wikipedia article), were prison camps in North-east Siberia where uncounted numbers (millions) of people were to die as enslaved for workforce and malnourishment. Often also, erraneously or correct, Sovjets are mentioned to have invented, not concentration camps, but the use of subordinated (imprison camps) prisoners as free labour. But on the global level, thats just as misleading as these days it is popular to point that at the time these camps didn't actually much exist in the public eye. not even in the western newspapers. Considering things on world history perspective, we find that not remarkably different was happening in the creation of some earlier (born) imperiums, namely within the British Imperialism and the beginnings of United States. Both imperiums had slavery in use as one of the main developing tools for profits, trade markets and sources of free labour. Had Sovjet system carried it on to the several centuries forward it all would have been buried under the dust of times...

Wish(?) to check the news(feed), motherlode of all the important information.

MuleSkinner book recommendations #4:

Fyodor Dostoevsky:

The Idiot

It´s hard to imagine a more serious novel than Fyodor Dostoevsky's The Idiot on questions of true christianity and principal purposes for humanity. Dostoevsky is often renowned as the creator of modern psychological roman, but The Idiot also targets on questions arising from human belief-systems, the search (of human kind) for religious, existential and ethical ideals. In fact, The Idiot was the first of his lenghty works, focusing on under surface depths of human mind as well as uncertainties in the given social order. At the time of publication (1869) it wasn´t accepted generally well, when compared to Tolstoys War and Peace, but afterwards the book has gained in respect. All this naturally makes it one of Dostoevskys most remarkable works, well-deserving its place among the other such ambitious novels like The Possessed (1872) and The Brothers Karamazov (1880).

The Idiot could also be described, at least to certain level, as an experimental laboratory on themes later fulfilled in Dostoevskys magnum opus, Brothers Karamazov. In spite of that, this is mainly a novel from prince Myshkin. The main character is presented as good-willing, illusionary example of human person. As consequence, the ever-idealistic Myshkin soon finds himself often as laughed but pitied, more or less a curiosity in upper class social life circles he's entering to. He also suffers from epilepsy which is also strongly connected to princes character (the novel contains a passage describing him suffering an epileptic seizure). Myshkin, the eternal walker in sunshine, the passenger on lighter side of one way street (of humanity), also has his counterpart. Thats Rogozhin, introduced and described in somewhat darker tones. Rogozhin presents princes total opposite: He is capable to evil deeds and frightening violent acts. In this manner, his presence balances the human ideals presented in Myshkins persona. Naturally there´s also a woman, Nastasya Filippovvna, much in sight of both men.

Books have been written from the reasons for birth of that spesific form of narration; russian 19th century realistic novel, which in content and form is far superior to the contemporary english and american efforts. After all, Russia had just years before moved on from feaudal serf bondage society (lasted as late as 1861) in towards the more modern state. Therefore it is, of course striking, that Idiot is mainly a novel from upper-class people. Dostojevsky's writing omits the poor peasants and the former serfs to the level that one could sometimes errate to think there weren´t any in russian society at the time (a point sometimes mentioned when comparing Dostoevskys realism to Tolstoys). However, the word Dostojevsky had most keen interest was not realistic, but fantastic. As firm believer in tzarist order, he propably never even considered class society questions as of importance, and besides, spent and wrote large parts of his life in foreign European nations. As a result, one finds that in Dostoevskys religious views the christianity is presented within the duality in human. Dualism being an important area also in psychology, Dostoevsky is often counted among its forefathers. But, his dualism is somewhat different in nature as its based on Christian faith and simultaneously in interest for demonic depths of human mind. Dualism, of course is much older in origin, even as a technique of characterization used in modern literature fiction.

The Idiot, in itself, is typical social drama, a serie of acts culminating to the unavoidable result. As mentioned, in more deeper level its a continued questioning in search of good humanity, and as such, propably more credible to christian ideals than the christianity itself. Thats basically so, because Dostoyevskys prose acknownledges the capability for pure evil in human personal (thats the question most common in his works, continuosly repeating in his novels, as is often reminded too). The illusions from ideals of humanity, and also Christ as such ideal, are reflected in the Prince Myshkins characters, the idiot. But Myshkins idealistic character would not truly exist without Rogozhins shadow on him, kind of a mirror-like contrast to his. By the way, similar characteristic interplay, created between Corto Maltese(though, he can not be depicted quite as idiot, but idealist) and Rasputin in Hugo Pratts comics could be a straight loan from The Idiot.

Taking books themes in deeper examination would be of frustrating and unnecessary. So I'll just mention that any person under age of 25 years would benefit significantly from reading it. Older ones...shouldn´t miss it either, though its plain idealistic tone can sometimes be a bit harder to cope with in case of someone with more (life-)experience. Anyway, we recommend this for anybody interested in world literature history classics and/or the emotional and psychological roots of russian 19th century society. In fact, according to my experience it might the best book to get acquainted with Dostoevkys ingenious art-of-words.

Newspost#240808

This week we are again pushing technological inventions a bit foreground, as we cannot keep from commenting the minilaps (expectable) market shares. As receiving the news from the emerging drive for an oil production super-power, Brazil and its improved sustainable (non deforestative) food production, we almost get the impression that it already jumped among the (most) developed world countries without having to take along the stressing unequality, poverty problems etc. Leapfrogging? Perhaps not, but more on that below...

The ever more important, scarce natural resource: water. As within climate change effects on global environmental and weathers far more countries are facing scarcity of fresh sweet water. Remembering that desalination (of sea water) has been a discussed topic for number of decades, it is a bit surprising that efficient ways to get drinkable water out of Oceans are yet to develop. At least use of them in large-scale is at its beginnings. Typical is, that one sole nation where this kind of desalination process is effectively used, happens to be Saudi-Arabia, rich, deserted nation at middle-east. Main problem in developing desalination systems has been the problems in creating energy-efficient techniques. In time this is propably solvable problem but whether it will be available to every place where needed especially developing countries, is a bit more complicated question...However, from advances in that area, we are informed from a proposition by Desertec, which has created trans-mediterranean plan for the effective use of solar from Sahara and wind energy to produce renewable electricity for power consumption and seawater desalination in the area. Several other efforts will be propably needed as, according to WWF, 97.5 of waters is salt water and portion available fresh water to drink and fx agricultural use only makes total of 1 percentage. Though, "Even this tiny proportion, however, would be enough for humans to live on earth if the water cycle was properly functioning and if we managed our water use wisely"

As concerning definitions of leapfrogging, one can check that at Wikipedia fx...or you can (dis)satisfy for our short explanation: ...means for the developing world countries to pass by mostly all from the developed worlds misdeeds and wrong-doings and messings on pollutative, environmental wasteful and expensive technology for energy/production techologies from past century and half... and to jump straight to the age of renewable energies and resources with new solutions.” In practise this means... for the developing countries its not just question of willingness to go greenish, because on many areas they actually have to; the existing (traditional, old) resources and energy sources are often becoming too expensive and hard to obtain for them. Not to mention the oil prices, some countries that posses large oil founds (like Brazil) can possibly rely on international companies need for suppliers, but in many other places more long-term solutions are searched. So, there are actually a lot of examples from alternative energy projects in the developing countries; geothermal energy in Kenya, not-to-mention China, which along with the greatest (in quantity) greenhouse gas emissions, is also already the leading renewable energy producer in world. Not-to-mention our quick search on solar from IEAs(International Energy Agency) Global Renewable Energy database which informs from a number of projects/plans, mostly North-American and European, but also South-Africa, Brazil, Mexico, India, Cook Islands, Uganda, Korea (Republic of), and - again - China.

As we've noticed Bit-torrent is pushed just about everywhere: integrated clients to browsers, hacks for different kinds of devices, torrent-friendly digi boxes, most lately we find, there's now D-Link DNS-323 networking Wlan with bittorrent downloading and media playing options. Straight from web to TV/PC/whatever the screen, why not?

What comes to more mainstream (yet) devices we are little bit less critical on minilaps actual technical capabilities. After all, launch of these machines (not much than year ago or so) began along with the campaigns for One Laptop Per Child project(with XO laptop), intended to bring cheap, greenish laptop as literacy learning companion for kids in developing countries. Along with that, of course, there's large new profitable markets (in target of) manufacturers. So why not make these devices (they decided) for western markets too and to guarantee the profits in the future, make first round everywhere with relatively insufficient capabilities (in the long run). So, now from reviews we find that new Acer Aspire (A110), apparently designed for the '2nd gen buyers' buyers, is a bit more promising portability tool; in addition to 8 Gb FlashMem it has SD-slot(in fact two of em) for storage increase of (supposed) 32 Gb which is seamlessly integrating to the total memory. For OS a Linux-based launcher can be chosen(and you can change that for Ubuntu, if wish so), according to test only the battery was less than convincing, because it didn't last even for watching the whole 1.5 h movie. So...some 280 € (not including the price of SD-mem enlargement) for Wifi-connection and possibility to use Linux? Alas, from manufacturers page we learn that the 8.9 inch screen comes with the adequate but not very satisfactory 262.000 colors and no bluetooth either... besides, its propably not very much ROHS-free product either as there´s no mention about it. So...all the promising details considered, we'll not at all convinced this should be raised on pedestal as the latest wonder.

However, if one now choose´s to get one subnotebook, there´s available alternative for OS,( recommended for experienced users with some coding experience only, though) Ubuntu Netbook Remix (from Canonical), based on Ubuntu Mobile Edition and especially designed for subnotebooks(as these incidentally choiced little remarks here tell): ”...to deliver a superb user experience while making it simple and cost-effective for device manufacturers to be able to bring their devices to the consumer marketplace," , although: ”...there is no word yet about potential commercial adopters for the Netbook Remix.”, but, ”[That]...so many users are installing the regular desktop version of Ubuntu on their Eee laptops is strong indication that there is demand for Ubuntu on subnotebooks.” Sure, why not?

Of considerable notion is (also) that mobile firefox is now better supported in portabilities (such as phones) within Nokias Maemo as well as on several KDE-based Linux UIs.

Newspost #170808

(We are again) reminded from the dubious nature of sports: in gymnastics, some girl-athletes were presumably under 16, the current age limit. That being so(?) we only recall the cheerful days of Nadia Comanecis total tens; According to our memory (could be wrong...) the rules were changed for the reason she being at the time 14, and at the time everybody was clapping hands and smiling, but now ”the fireworks weren´t real either...” (BBC WorldNews Podcast, 12/08 PM). So, in the openning TV-watchers witnessed somewhat modified spectacle (but just in the name of Olympic spirit)...Other topics: Charles asks for a halting the genetic food disaster...Naturally any food production aiming to profit on markets with products that are for basic human needs (such as hunger) is but dubious, as well as most often untasty (kind of food). Luckily, the tactics seen so far have guaranteed that: ”consumers in Europe do not want to eat GM food...”

The great big... company made recently an announced on starting a blog for the first steps of its new happy family member, called E7 (or was it already named Vienna in some instance, I heard the name leaked out someplace). We, here at the MSW of course stay on tune as much as anybody else and welcome this act of openness as much promising as the rumours from (possible) planning stage of Midori, the next generation OS successsor for Windows, bringing (possibly) better flexibility and communicativity with other Oss and apps. No hard feelings, after all these years without noteworthy competitor its hard to even imagine the kind of computing would have been without the success of Windows. Perhaps something like A.Huxleys BNW excluding the totalitaric use of pleasuredome relaxants.

Not just hightechs, biotechs or knuckle-heads: they say nanotechnology is slowly but surely making its way towards the public revelation (on the level of really applicable creations). The grief for ever smaller, futuristics particles for devices is apparent, as ”optical lithography methods are rapidly approaching their fundamental limits.” Now, we are informed that with the new ways(lets not go to details too precisely...) to manipulate block copolymers even ”feature sizes below 20 nanometers are possible” and the traditional inherent size limitations can be circumvented. The actual experimental use of miniaturization in microelectronics is to take some five-to-ten years more because of other barriers...but what this all means? Ipod in the size of pinhead? But how do I plug in the headphones(do I have to, actually)? Is there alternative technical solutions for expectable miniaturization? I bet not. Besides, other instance (of science) has succesfully found ways to make things invisible. True, in spite of that the actual solutions are of course within...X years they have succeeded in making the light(rays?) circumventing the surface of particular thing. Now...what if I lose the pinhead and forget the invisibility switcher on? No need to worry, of course its connected to main station and can be geolocated...but if there's some failure on signal or certain inpenetrable material blocks the connection? Do I need to take insurance on this device also (won´t possibly cost but half the enormous price of the actual device...)

On forestry and biofuels field we find that ”The future for the orangutans is in the hands of the humans now”. As for due to palm oils increased demand, the price raises and soforth, forest go under cuttings. The extinct has been predicted to be of immediate threat as soon as 2015 (!). If that could be avoided, there seems to be no lack of alarm signs apparently everywhere else as well, yet there´s some steps forward too: there are now standards on Sustainable Palm Oil and Forests preservation to fight back further deforestation. Alarming threats in little longer in foresight also as more from worlds (rain)forests go under cuttings. But, (numbers from Treehugger citing the RRI-report) who´s to blame for an additional 515 million hectares of worlds forests needed under axe ´til 2030 for the food and consumption ?(and because of population increase in the next 20 years even more will be needed mostly just to feed the people in (under)developed countries)...Agriculturalists? Farmers? The poor people? No, we think its the biofuels (1st generation most apparently, from the claimed sustainability of the 2nd gen. we yet have not any proofs), the most immediate new misused invention since the fossil fuels...And meanwhile... somebody dreams from faking the catchery of Bigfoot(s)(well, when asked for making profit from it, answered: "as much as we can..."!?) Yes, we all are most blessed to live these exiting world wide mass-communication times when nothing dreadful really seems to be happening until afterwards noticed(remember the spectacular TV-wars most recently, predicted genetic paradise lands and most of all the newest do-it-yourself TV-series for the ecologically-minded(last one don´t add much to deforestation, does it?).
