Species Endangerd (MS-Blog Series from) / X

The Coral Reefs

There's an unestimated amount of life-form and species at the Oceans of the world. As our original purpose in these series was represent also some examples of the fish (sometimes said that contain procentually the largest number of them include for the threatened species), would have been suitable to present at least few of them. But, we haven't too excessively time on this and, possibly, that would also have required having more particular knowledge, ao. So, on this basis it's only logical selection to select the reefs – and they well represent the variety of life of the seas. (Even more so, since some estimates seem say/predict that reefs could suffer further 20-30 per cent loss at just during following 30-40 years time).


Like renown, the life originally begun on seas and the corals as well have existed through distant periods of time. Nowadays they're probably more threatened than ever before during their existence through several past millions years. Although, on some previous periods the reefs have also undergone periods of their almost complete destruction (like larger parts from marine life, in during the so called former mass extinction events). Yet, they still survive on our times. So, on the basis of this, the modern man-made threats considering it's no underestimate if we say them (reefs) nowadays could classify – on similar category as the formerly listed animal species examples – for the EN (Endangered); however, on criteria of their histories of slow gradual growth and larger parts of marine life they sustain, classification as Critically endangered would, perhaps, appear no less correct and quite justified.
(Whatever the opinion of that - feels maybe little like drawing lines on water - the Oceans in general are source of the uncomparable diversity of life, multiple times that what exists on lands. And the reefs obviously form some of the most impressive part of that.)


Contrary to sometimes common belief, the corals are organic animal life-forms (not plants or rocks). They often appear form large areas with complex structures which have in time grown for the known oceanic reefs, particularly on warmer latitudes, and usually at areas closer the (shallow) coastal sea. (The Coral Triangle alone is estimated to contain about a one third from area of all coral reefs at seas.)
The reefs provide important and flourishing environments for greatest number of fish on most anywhere, for other animals as well, non-vertebrate and fx the sea plant. It is estimated that closer half of the fish living on reefs are dependable on the existence of corals for food, shelter and also on their reproduction. Seems stated as well that the reefs probably support highest biodiversity in the world (it been occasionally estimated that they possibly support about a quarter of all the marine species found on Oceans.) For humans they appear important on uses as fishing areas and of other subsistence needs, ao.


Since any of that oceanic life would appear probably too vast an area to represent on this (probably we haven't too much of a knowledge either), it suffices us list some species that appear to commonly presented favorites at marine biology (TV-) series. (But as that life of reefs is said so abundant and fx colourful, the films and pics, like often noticed, only show a pale reflection from it. Maybe any hobbyist of the deep sea diving, fx , would have a lot more catching stories to tell...) Anyway, for some most usual species presented on those and, perhaps more typical on certain reefs, are the colourful Clown fish (Amphirimidae) – they are renown of the manner of living at rare kind of symbiosis with the Sea anemones (the clown fish receive cover and protection of the anemones, but the 'sea plants' tentacles can be appear danger for some other fish, occasionally it even catches the prey from the clown-fish, it said).


As well as the fish, there's many colourful and numerous species on the 'marine plants' (but all of those in the following actually are animals adapted to living on sea bottom). Fx, for the better known species from echinodermata (apparently) belong also the Sea lilies (of the genus crinoidea), and as well the holochteroidea. The former especially appear numerous on coral reef, and they also represent species that move slowly on the sea floors. As well, somewhat similarly species adapted to various depths at seas, but also some usually seen on coastal reefs, are the Sea urchinsthere's at least about 1000 different species of them, several are common on reefs (their thorns can be of considerable harm and it's better avoid stepping on some). However they're also very enduring animals, some species dig - with the patience, the process lasting many years – their places of stay on fx rocks  surface (and even at steel balks on harbours). Along with the mentioned, there are countless number of the fish, marine mammals and the reptilian; dugong (probably), manatee, sea turtles, fx, etc.




The main straight-forward threats of the reefs consist fx over-fishing and other human caused harms. Over-fishing can (very potentially) affect the reefs natural ecology and cause changes at species relations which then maybe further result for changes at their ecology. However, humans have fished on much of these places as long as they've practised that elsewhere, so the most harmful impacts are perhaps newer from origin. Some of those are poison fishing, use of paralyzing chemicals to catch collectible species and fishing with explosives (where often the reefs coral and other species get destructed as well). (Both practices sometimes said common on some areas at the Coral Triangle, ao.) Similarly, there's more typical pollution and fx the agricultural pesticides gathering on water flowing to coastal waters, etc. Also, the building projects on coasts, often cause destruction of reefs as co-result. And other things, oil spills and ships traffic, the garbage and thrash thrown on waters, etc.


Yet, the 'newer' noticed harms, and what may (potentially) threaten most reefs on the oceans, is said possibly to emerge as consequence of increased the GHS-emissions. As consequences within accumulation of atmospheric gases that dissolve on seas, the acidification level of waters follows to grow, or precisely leads for the reduction on Ocean water Ph. That slows  growth of the coral, and possibly can cause their complete destruction (on places at least). Or, so that was said some time ago, mostly it been said affecting for calcification forming organism, typically coral polypes. How severely and how rapidly such effect could take place may be is not yet that well known, at least it's somewhat unsure how the scenario may appear on different sea environments , etc. But even if it not yet proven a scenario, some of the adverse effects of the sea water warming are found form the coral bleaching, which is known having caused general degradation on corals and their disappearances from (more or less large) area. Although, the phenomenon also is relatively new from it's (known) origins, and wasn't yet too much recognized until about the 1970s.


Because there's probably emerged further knowledge from many of the above aspects (that we've had no time to check), it is advisable and easy to view that on elsewhere. Anyway, according to what we find said, the reefs appearance are generally believed to change from their current days form, resulting most because of the warming (at some time-scale). Some of the changes, and as main disadvantages mentioned may (likely) be the losses on their protectivity against storms impacts and the reefs recreational value may also reduce and/or lead for loss in the fisheries.


It's also said some coastal eco-systems formed by the mangroves and seagrasses are known to interact and with reefs to some level, and somewhat dependent of their healthy conditions, on them too. Mangroves on coastal areas have, during some recent decades, been destroyed on many areas and/or been turned for human production needs, aquacultures and agricultural use, ao. They are said some of the most heavily stressed (tropical) coastal areas. But it's probably beyond our understanding how much many of mentioned changes (so far) have affected the reefs existence, and likely there's also some newer knowledge been generated from these things. Anyway, the mangroves and seagrasses on coastal areas are said being important carbon sinks, comparable to role of rain forests on that (even that they consist much smaller geographical areas).


More generally appears that the seas, been considered as filters for all kinds of pollutants longer times until our time, often reveal the real damages only when some of that emerges to be seen as more visibly seen as problems and destruction...fortunate aspect may be that seas generally make largest parts of the worlds surface area, so they also still contain much what has prevailed (even) outside human purposes and efforts to make uses from. As the reefs ecology and adaptavity is not too well known it's also possible that them may appear more durable, of some forms or at areas. However, they're also often noticed probably most vulnerable eco-systems of the seas for effect of predicted climate change. Unfortunately them appear also the most flourishing, or most easily reachable part of that flourishment for humans. Humans, of course, have all the possibilities to change much of the past false ways on their uses natures for the better (and for more enduring ways).

Species Endangered (MS-Blog Series from) IX / 09

(The) Gila-Monster

From the variety of lizards in the world, we've selected to our series a rarer example, the venomous Gila-monster (Heloderm heloderm). It being one from only two venomous lizards and therefore actually an oddity, that surprising or even strange - but the other venomous species also inhabits Sonora desert, its (Mexican) beaded lizard (Heloderma horriblis, LC) (Together these make separate a sub-group of their own, Helodermatidae). As the Gilas are culturally rather multiform from beliefs and tales, also mentioned in this connection its names in few other languages (in French, Lézard Perlé and, Spanish Monstruo de Gila) (From Gila-pics, see fx the links at the end of text, they also contain more species specific information than is presented here).



From (false) Gila-myths and circumvented stories there is fx the popular belief from this lizard being capable to jump for an attack. Also – according to Dr Sewards Gila-pages – they've in the past (unjustified) fx been believed able to poison with their unhealthy, rotten smelling 'Gila-breath', and, also 'their bite being impossible to break off' (~won't let go until dawn of the day !). Both are only superstition and Gila's only move slowly on the ground, but actually they do bite hard if harmed. Having no Gila's close my headquarters, I've only encountered them in the comics, which actually gave me (actual) reason and interest for this example – but this mentioned only as example from these (Gila-)myths, typical of those, I suppose; In the Charlier-Giraud book from the adventures of lt (Mike) Blueberry (The Lost Dutchman's Mine1.) the old gold-digger/traitor finds himself trapped in pueblo housing and when searching for drink there's only a bowl of water where floats a dead Gila-monster...(Quite obviously any animal carcass in the boiling desert sun and heat spoils the water, but this only mentioned as typical example from intentional use of the lizards bad reputation.)



In this part on our series we don't possibly have space lengthy histories/stories from lizards (
lacertilia) and/or reptiles evolution, but few perhaps can briefly be mentioned (as some comparison, though there seems to be apparently hundreds species their various genera and the relatins not always too clear, perhaps.). The sub-order Squamata, (according to information we find) contains basically lizards and snakes species with overlapping scales. Includes the 'modern lizards' generally, but also from evolutionary more distant origin still is extant Tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus, separated for its own genus/group and the sole member in it). Mentioned Tuatara(s) survive today only in New Zealand islands and is considered a 'living fossil' even among reptiles (it even has 'false' 3rd eye on its forehead, sometimes assumed a remnant from early evolutionary experiments in the development of vision) Also, Tuatara is supposed to originate from about 180 M years to the past. In parallel with its (supposedly) 'ancestral' preceding species/earliest lizards also evolved the Archosaurs, which in their time gave rise for various other animal groups including crocodilians and dinosaurs (and from latter then subsequently evolved the birds, according to current theories and beliefs).


But, briefly the modern groups of lizards and snakes are known to have later evolved for their own path from the lizards
'base group', Lepidosaurs (from which, apparently earlier, separated a different lineage reaching for the extant Tuatara). Among the various lizards suborder(s), we find currently at least extant clans of the Iguania, Gekkota, Amphisbaenia ('worm lizards), Autarchoglossa ('skinks' and other varieties, including the snakes) – I guess they make the classfied main groups, at least supposedly it being so (But snakes fx also are usually excluded from lizard and classified as separate subordinate clan of their own). All the mentioned (lizard) groups actually contain rather various interesting peculiarities, (and more, like the Chameleons, that mostly appear in African forests...or, fx Galapagós-island endemic and particular species; Sea Iguanas?/Leguans (VU) fx, that are the only marine lizard species.) But, Anyway, various lizard genera (like Iguanas, and Gekkos especially) also are adapted to climbing on trees at tropical forests, and so the Iguanas are common in ranges from South America to Mexico and Caribbean islands (/and so appear inhabiting mainly the Central- and South American tropical forests.)


Lizards that perhaps somewhat more resemble the Gilas/Helodermatidae group are found from Varanidae or the 'monitor lizards' (at least, I suppose these are synomous category, if it not being that the other is a sub-group of the other...)
like the Comodo Dragon (Varanus komodoensis, VU) – although geographically rather distant; It only inhabits restricted Comodo islands, and is largest of the extant lizards. They can reach about 2.5 m and weight almost 100 kg – Gila's for comparison, only are about 50-60 cm and weight some 4-5 kg that also being rather large for extant lizards (many that appear common in various parts of the world are only tens of centimeters in length. The small lizards are more typical of course, but basically also mostly carnivorous.) The Varanidae contain plenty more larger species, but, here no space for further observations... Strangely, but probably a result from its limited (current) range the Comodo dragon remained practically unknown to (science) all up until the early 20th century. To the contrary Gilas have been known (for science) long time, at least since the 19th century at least.


Gila Monsters deserted living environments would therefore perhaps feel a bit peculiar from this point-of-view. But, actually deserts offer a habitat for many lizard species – perhaps, it has something to do with their distant origin from the Reptilian ages (“When the Dinosaurs reigned the Earth” as goes that common paraphrase...). Because the Earthly climates Millions of years ago in the prehistory were lot warmer than today, the animals with changing body temperatures nowadays appear more commonly in places where there's hot and/or humid conditions, like rain forests and deserts – The lizards kind of made logical conclusions and selected the warmer regions as the global climates did coollen considerably after the K/T-boundary2. , about 65 Million year ago). - But, it must be reminded, plenty extant reptile and lizard species also inhabit the more temperate regions, of course. Also noticed (here), that lizards are among the most abundant species on deserts (In fact, snakes are found more numerous, but lizards are more often seen since they are active in day-time and snakes mostly are nocturnal).

Even for the species that adapt their body temperatures for changes of air and ground warmth (like the reptiles), the deserts can be extreme environments; fx at Sahara in the hottest times of the day temperature can raise over the 50 C (in shade) and – to the contrary – in the night-time can be very cold since warmth of the day soon escapes for the open skies (As well, in the desert Gobi some -40 degrees Celsius night temperatures have been measured). In the hottest periods at the deserted environments even the lizards usually rest in the shades. Gila's particular districts merely consist from somewhat semi-arid environment it seems, they are found from scrubland, and other places with limited vegetation, and, oak woodland (fx). Like many species, they also spend certain season (winter) in hibernation (and we find it surviving over that period with the grease stored in its tail. Also the species actually predates and eats only handful of times in during the dry season when its actively 'awake'). Other periods, Gilas spend major part (95 per cent, it is mentioned) of their time hiding in the burrows, under rocks and covers, etc. So it is noticed being that lizards (like any species, but Gila's in this case) also are behaviorally adapted for their living environment (desert) and its conditions.


The poison of the Gilas, usually serves as a defence since it mainly hunts slowly moving animals, fx mammalian and reptiles eggs, smaller desert species, and carrion. Can eat other smaller reptiles too. The Gila's are immune for their own poison as are fx some amphibians species (from the reasons that are not especially clear, seems to be mentioned). Natural enemies Gila's don't have, that much powerful their venom is, fx its capable to kill rabbit easily and the larger desert species like coyote soon learn to avoid it.


It feels therefore quite easy understand the reasons causing their 'bad reputation' and that they've been (especially in the past) killed from the fear of species being venomous (although, according to dr Sewards pages there's no reliable accounts from human deaths having resulted from Gila bites and also they're basically slow in movement.) Anyway, for one not living in their particular districts it feels a bit surprising that more recently habitat loss from the uses of agriculture is mentioned as main threat for Gila Monster, but so is mentioned, as their favored living areas have been cleared from the way of cotton fields, fruits plants and human settlements. Far more typical feels the other main threat for Gilas; Like many comparable decorative looking lizards they are found illegally collected for the pet trade and private collections. (Although, it actually feels quite surprising that people would want to hold venomous animals as pets, even poison teeth removed. But, often these species are also pretty spectacular from appearance. Gila's, like many other species, are also raised on captivity and sold in the legal pet market).


There's of course various lizards that are collected/hunted for pets, but in this case we find also the past histories from the endangerment of various subspecies of Iguanas (Ground Iguanas/Leguans?). From these impressive lizards, some (often large species) were earlier such common in their isolated habitats at West-Indian Islands that shiploads of them were transported for US, and other places, causing some species endemic to islands disappear completely. (Another particularly harmful factor mentioned has been the introduction of the predative Indian Mongoose for their natural environments.) More recent times (fx the Green Iguanas, Iguana Iguana) has seen intensified raise on captive farming market at different countries in the South America and still exists apparently huge demand (some several hundreds of thousands of iguanas in single year at 1990s, sold at US solely). As the main downside, many animals also die as result of insufficient care (ao) in farms or the pet homes. From the Gila's we find that they've been protected species for some time, and (for their luck) there's also been breeding program of them since 1963 at San Diego Zoo.



Global trade of the (wild) animals is not limited for the lizards of course, and the methods/level of care probably a lot varies. Large part of the popular species sold in the pet shops originate from the South-Asian animal farms, but as well from elsewhere (mostly the tropical region). In fact, collector markets exist in the different parts of the world, and largely it's been noticed that often in the process of one single animal captured for the zoo/animal farm/lab/home many other may have been harmed/killed. Also many species that are favored from their peculiar and colourful looks or from other reasons aren't necessary very well adapted for life as pets.


Many bird species have been declined from collecting them (parrots, ao, and from the past histories, at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, fx the Birds of paradise species and Egrets feathers were largely collected – latter mainly for making of hats, former also for museum collections, etc.) Snakes probably make another most typical group (whose wild populations) may be generally harmed from pet trade. Concerns even aquarium fishes, though one would suppose most easy to successfully reproduce them in numbers without harming wild populations. (On the other hand, it can be mentioned that in some cases the establishment of legal market and pet farms may have helped save animals wild populations.) But, from that Beer-Morris book (often referred in these posts), we also find plenty more animal species, mainly/or partly endangered as result from the (illegal) trade of species and their collecting; fx Birdwing butterfly (Ornithoptera alexandrae, EN), Red-Kneed Tarantula (Euathlus smithi, NT) (- though it feels quite strange how a single Indiana Jones film might have 'created' the mass demand and largely increased Tarantula collecting, but so is mentioned), Golden Mantella (Mantella aurantiaca, CR), Egyptian Tortoise (Testudo kleinmanni, CR). In addition to these few examples, there's also various more - including plenty monkey species, etc.


So, we can in this case briefly finish this post by noticing this exemplary species, Gila-monster, probably having somewhat benefited from it's 'life-style', largely under covers/hides (and the early days of its being protected, and as well the mentioned captive-breeding program maintained in the zoos rather early, I suppose) - even if the species original habitat has been reducing, nowadays. For a funny part, from its appearances in movies, is mentioned (Wikipedia) also the existence of 50ies b-movie The Giant Gila Monster (among the worst in those, I kind of remember it having been...)

1. Is the name of the 1990s repressed album, but if I remember that correct, this brief Gila appearance is only presented in the original 1970s version; redrawn albums slightly differ from detail and I cannot quite recollect original name of that earlier version.



2. With the K/T-boundary, we mean the Cretaceous-Tertiary edge when the global climates changed largely for colder environments
(/the end of Mesozoic and begin of Cenozoic era) - And not the K/T – mass-extinction event or the possible cause/causes of it (like the Asteroid impact(s) ; Supernova / Increases of cosmic radiation ; or Vulcanic activity , that are nowadays usually stated as the most likely reasons that might have caused the Dinosarus disappearance from Earth in those distant times, ca 80-60 Million years ago... the first mentioned apparently nowadays the most generally accepted theory.)

Intermission (II.)

/ Book recommendation #21 1/2

Our seasonal pause now practically at the past, returning for these series of contemplations and texts. From the matters (soon) actual appears a question of some importance for to decide from follower to our butterfly-series; feels that (at the close future) these are finished and something on behalf would be needed. (A matter of not too hasty decisions, it's considered already now.)

But thats open for suggestion; Birds would make rather obvious following...On the other hand, perhaps some other group from insects would fit better, beetles, cockroaches, shellfish, whatever...Although, in fact, it's almost decided that after that in the meantime we'll have some historical paintings; 1st in the series already here, likely each 'll be about few weeks (but that series lasting only a short-while, anyway)....As from contenders in the variety of animal life, fx the dragonflies would make noteworthy series (Pic beside a damselfly, actually...) Also, speaks from their behalf fx variety in colours and from the evolutionary history they are hundreds millions years 'developed' (Nowadays also threatened from the loss of the preferred watery environments, increase of pesticides, fx, so a possible choice in our series too.). Damselflies are often found resting on aquatic plants, since their wings don't permit flights of very long distances – but their 'cousins', (some species of) dragonflies are discovered to migrate even across oceanic ranges, thousands of km's...And - as result of these particular abilities - (a dragonfly) can fly forwards, backwards, up and down, whatever direction it needs to...said to be the most versatile fliers that exist, from the insects, animal generally or even if compared for flying maccines.

To pore over the literary shortcomings of twenty years ago, to attempt to patch a faulty work into the perfection it missed at it's first execution, to spend one's middle age in trying to mend the artistic sins committed and bequeathed by that different person who was oneself in youth – all this is surely in vain and futile.”(From forewords by Huxley)


(Above citate from forewords in the 1946 edition, where Huxley kind of defends the books 'failures'). Nevertheless, the question seems to have had some place in his thinking afterwards, since author in his later years wrote also BNW revisited (1958), which consisted from observing the books topics on the light of the actual state of things (at that time). Having not read those, and neither any other from Huxley's other novels ('The Doors of Perception', p 1954 likely the best known from his writings of the later years, a book that kind of made him an apostle of the emerging youth movement), this brief recommend is written just on the basis of that original BNW-book. Although I feel that the books hardly any novelty example in literature classics/belles-lettres, it has more than secured its place among the important signposts/'early' attempts to modern futuristics (and critique) - and was published almost a hundred years ago, besides.


Like mentioned earlier it was perhaps rather that 'Victorian fear of the abyss' than any views of the future that might have inspired Huxley when writing the novel. But, there's also those post-war paragraphs by author himself (with following often cited sentences); “A really efficient totalitarian state would be one in which the all-powerful executive of political bosses and their army of managers control a population of slaves who do not have to be coerced, because they love their servitude. To make them love it is the task assigned, in present-day totalitarian states, to ministries of propaganda, newspaper editors and school-teachers.”, And also; “The most important Manhattan Projects of the future will be vast government-sponsored inquiries into what the politicians and participating scientist will call 'the problem of happiness' – in other words, the problem of making people love their servitude.” (The forewords, of course , are usually also seen as the reflection of that post WW II atmosphere, the uncertainties from the oncoming direction of the society's and democracies; Huxley himself emphasizes that the books actual themes are from societal developments, and not so much from expectable technological advancements..Also there's some admonitions, but in this we'll now have to pass them with just a mention...)


But like in the case of any comparable form or rule of totalitarian order (and this only is said concerning the MSW, not addressed to any past or present comparable examples), once decided and from the moment it was decided, obviously no moral barriers are considered worth consideration...Apparent in this (comparable) case also is, that no attempt for explanations, justifications or any statements was ever needed, and most obviously it was probably taken as given, just as some new bucketfuls of cheap entertainment; also, from this particular problem from happiness (like defined in the preceding paragraph), likely then it has been solved during those decades separating this fictional example from these current times...And therefore, no questions were asked, which of course, may have been the original purpose by the makers of it (but, all this also only mentioned in passing here.)

Huxley's own (after-)words - those sentences at the 1946 edition - also mention such societies possibly only couple generations away... And since that actually means the current times, it can also be said that, - lucky for us – he was so foresighted in creation of his fictional worlds or the symbolic allusions of the real worlds, (those take the form of 'a watching eye', or fx that 'fear of the Victorian abyss', it's practically same as 'fear of the dark') ; thought control, automated bodies, pleasuredolesceants, the cleanliness and godliness of the arriving lab techs, medicinery boxes 'hidden' behind corners - there's not been too much anew after that the BNW was written, we notice from this point-of-view. Intermission (I.)



So far, so good. In spite of our slight anticipations of the summer time, recent Month (August) and this early September saw us even more productive than any a preceding period. Obviously, these repressive MSW tactics don't seem to hammer us down, work-a-holics (since we are). And so, the preceding Month productivity consisted from 6 posts, remaining 3 stories then passed to be presented in this Month (some of those earlier completed posts, and most of this summer productivity consisting from our animal series, of course.)

But, obviously this recent hasty scheduel only appears a temporary occurrence and for the subsequent time it's more realistic to expect about 2-3 posts per Month, at the most. In case, if we'll keep them for these lenghtier stories. But before that, it's time for our period of rest, replacements of mental health and spare parts - the annual periodic Month for our holidays. And also, with compliments, also the wishing wells for that respected undisputed despot, authorized dictating mumble bumble and outrageous master mind of the Muleskinner World (with our most monotonic and pathetic gestures, probably they just enjoyed all that) – Concerning the holidays, however, this year we're not going for distant paradises, but instead for more closer Icy Worlds, as the appreciated Odysseus Paxton kindly tells us (and I always like to travel).


(And then a few words from the musical recommendation like has been the habit in these imissionary texts) ...but before that, we'll (somewhat freely, from memory) cite the words of that foregone statesman, W.C. ; 'Rarely in the history of human kind has there been seen such a small group with such great effort and oppositive will against such a moral degradation and sick aim to dominate and prevail...' Ourselves then, to the contrary, we can of course observe that (current) lack of moral (of the MSW despots/tactics) as only a fanciness for the hanky panky, but unavoidably it appears merely just as much significant evidence from the true nature and characteristics for those sadistic and twisted minds. After all, we were repeatedly (of course, means that our earlier work until arriving for this point was demolished...cowardice tactics, yes indeed) forced to tell you all that (inbriefed in the preceding stories and tales), so I guess we've been rather successful having arrived at this point. (Another thing, apparently we'll reach that 100th anniversary post well before the X-mas, piece of cake but worth of some more refreshments too. So this appears celebratory post as well...)

Therefore, without too many words, this time a much hilarious record recommendation from behind decades. It's Live ; Spanky and our Gang (Mercury records, 1968). Like the sleeve texts say, this was actually pressed and sold out only after the group had disbanded, as to offer the fans some moments from groups unforgettable live-sound. Recorded in some obscure Floridan club surroundings before groups break-out in about mid 1960s, it's a mixture of theatrical moments, swinging 60'ies and more memorable traditional numbers. The notable songs include Nagasaki, Waltzing Matilda, etc. and the record mostly keeps its amusement through their repertoire (at that time). There it also states: "Whether or not you were fortunate enough to have seen Spanky and our Gang in person, you'll know what all the excitement was about once you've listened to this historic 'Live' performance." It's just that magic in the air, or something like that...


But while we're away, I'll therefore also like to loan a few words from another less renown old classic, the lines are, of course, from that Buffy St. Marie disc we've continuosly kept citing and I also keep humming it occasionally, especially the lines: “The God is alive, the magic is a foot. The magic never weakened. The magic is alive.” And that's about all this time, until the holiday seasons are over...

The bat is an intermediate animal between bird and mouse, so that it can be called a flying mouse; although it can be classed neither as a bird nor a mouse for it has the appearance of both.” - Konrad Gessner (1516-1565) , (fom Schrober-Grimmberger, p. 11)



This early interpretation, often cited as funny and completely misleading from the bats place and origins in the nature well describes their 'oddities' as animal group. Among mammalians they represent a special case from variety of reasons: They are the sole mammals that can fly. Microbats (Microchiroptera) also use echolocation (or echo-sound) in that flight and for hunting of their prey. As well, the bats have remained largely unchanged from their earliest proven ancestral origin as species, that according to fossil record (and as such, cautious estimate) dates back over 50 million years to the past. Not less meaningful, bats being mainly creatures of the night, they have been (/still are) often associated with forces of evil and other dark origins in general, which may have caused their direct persecution, even. This text, of course, mostly focuses on the preceding aspects and bats in general, but we're not ignoring the human-bat relationships completely.



However trivial in this case, my own first memory from bats dates back for the early childhood, and is from the cabin site situated near small pond where our family used to spend the summer holidays. Sometime, at the age of 5 or less I recollect having seen there bats in the morning light, hanging from the cabin logs with their hind legs, as bats usually do. Since that, (like most people, perhaps) I've rarely seen bats. (My kids probably haven't even encountered one outside animal park/zoo, which makes me sometimes think that memory as example from the shifting baseline; but, on the other hand this can only hold an experience in the life of typical urbanized individual, and also it may originate from the fact that bats are seen most active only in hours after the sunset/preceding sunrise.) Also, as they are easily disturbed and careful fliers, mostly they avoid human watcher – a typical glimpse from bat hunting in the night sky is seen somewhere closer to edge of eye-sight.


Perhaps because these creatures have specialized on night-flight(/and most birds, contrary to bats are active in the day-time) bats in during their evolution are found diversified for surprising large variety of species. In fact, the number of different bat species makes it reasonable to say every 4th or 5th mammal being a flying one. Usually bats worldwide are estimated to contain around 1000 different species. Some are very common, but many are having only very limited habitat, fx some species are restricted to certain cave(s). Traditional scientific view has divided bats for the mentioned microbats and megabats (Megachiroptera). First mentioned are more numerous presenting about well over 700 species, rest consists from megabats1. Megabats - to the contrary - are almost with no exception, herbivorous fruit-eaters and only appear on tropical regions. Microbats usually prefer insectivorous diet.

In addition to that, there's few species having adapted for day-light, like African Yellow-Winged bat (Lavia frons);(strangely, more specific information wasn't available, but likely they have pretty common range...), although that's exceptional. And - almost like to better represent bats diversity as animal group we also find some examples more differing in their diets. In addition to more common insectivorous and fruit-eating species there's few specialized carnivorous bats like the (Australian) False vampire/ the Ghost bat (Macroderma gigas, VU) and Mexican Fish-eating species(Myotis vives, VU) - the fishing bats are further divided for few subspecies. In overall, these still represent exceptional cases.


The peculiar look of various bats, perhaps, and their preferred time of hunting their prey at night has often caused bats associatioted with evil forces (in the past); That so, not just in the christian mythology, but also in some other religions. - And besides, there's that common identification with the good old count Dracula and his companions better known from the books and flicks. But, in reality only few bat species sustain with blood, although the (real) vampire-bats (like Desmodus rotundus) do so (but not the manner of that popular imaginery, and the amount it feeds also is very minimal. Also it rarely occur to 'err' for humans. More harmfully, they are also known to spread some diseases.) Since most naturalists/biologists tend to despise those vampire stories as prejudices and misbeliefs, more usual in the popular imagination, we'll restrain from those in this context (however exiting these are from the fictional view, real bats resemble those as little as they have in common with the Batman – or, alternatively his competitor in the super heroic deeds, Bat girl, less sinister from character moods and doings.) However, it is also often noticed that the bats can look quite frightening, especially when opening their mouth for echolocating.



Nevertheless, the cultural beliefs are rather various and interesting, not the least because bats from evolutionary origin are relatively little known (we'll return to that after few sentences). From the christian imaginery a common motive is the devils painted with bat wings, but also fx some African tribes connect the bat for the witchcraft. Ancient Mayas depicted bat as deity symbolizing 'the underworld', according to hieroglyphs where bat frequently apears. To the contrary - in Chinese and Japan imaginery bats have always been presented as symbols of happiness. Fx, a common ornamental design/talisman from 18th century China represents tree as symbol of life surrounded by five bat figures as concepts of health, wealth, happiness, longevity and peaceful death. As well, in some European heraldry the bat-motive has been in use for the centuries, fx it is found in form of the coat-of-arms from the city Valencia, Spain (Scrober-Grimmberger, p. 9-10) (and perhaps transferred from that to the emblems in football heraldry, in the cases of Valencia CF and FC Barcelona). In many native American tales bat represents a trickster spirit (but, so do some other animals).

And, again to the contrary (perhaps little more irrelevant, but nevertheless mentioned) – many bat species favor/inhabit the old churches buildings, simply from the reason that those by architecture contain holes and hides that bats can use for the resting, winter hibernating, etc. So, quite the opposite to that 'traditional' or popular view, they are found quietly respecting the peacefulness of the church buildings and instead are active mostly during the night hours.


Besides the claims from bats dark origins (that probably partly resulting from their strange looks), also classification of bats was found difficult in the early times of natural history. Already in the beginning was noted that 16th century naturalist and bibliographer (Gessner) who classified them in the same genera with mices. This conception has remained for the later times fx in the naming of the Greater mouse-eared bat (Myotis myotis). Also the Swedish biologist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778), creator of the animal classification, faced similar problems in classifying bat and first placed it in his Systema Naturae (1735) among the predatory animals. Some 30 years later he changed the view, and on the basis of the outer characteristics (existence of mammalian teats) classified it for the same clan as the apes.(Schrober-Grimmberger, p. 11) Since that, from the morphological characteristics bats were placed in the group that also contains primates, tree shrews, flying lemurs.


However, more recent knowledge, according to DNA notices Chiroptera more closely related for the other early branches of mammalian families, the 'eulipotyphlan insectivores'. Included in the same group as bats are some of the most ancient mammalian species like moles and shrews. (Noticeably, mentioned is the shrews being capable for echolocation as are also the microbats). Also, according the molecular studies it has been supposed, flight and (laryngeal) echolocation in bats having evolved during some 25 million years time, latter sometimes presumed for the period between 83 to 58 million years in the past - These capabilities (echolocation, flight), on that basis are believed to have evolved before the appearance of most recent common ancestor for living and known earliest bats from fossil taxa.(“Integrated fossil...”, 2001) However, the oldest fossils [at least according the information that appeared available for us in MSW when searched] are only known from behind about some 50 million years. So it seems occasionally have been reasoned quite possible that perhaps the flight developed first, (that being the most recent belief, likely). But, in this context we can only notice that bats evolution has been and likely still is a field of rather controversial views, so we're not going further on theories from their earliest origins.

Anyway, it is stated that quite likely that distant (common) ancestor of the extant bats and the foregone species known only from fossils (fx Icaronycterix, Archaeonycteris, Palaeochiropteryx) was a bat with (laryngeal) echolocation and in the megabats (which probably later evolved from the microbats) this feature was lost in some later period (“Integrated fossil...”, 2001). As these various bats are known suddenly appearing in the fossil data at the early Eocene (ca mentioned 50 Mya in the past, fossils found fx from the Wyoming and Paris basin), it is also interesting to notice that early bats - in their primitive but largely similar features to those found in the extant ones - already were relatively diversified in flight capabilities. Fx, Icaronycteris and Archaeonycteris present species with non-specialized flight, that likely were accustomed for the open spaces. To the contrary, Palaeochiropteryx was smaller species and possibly capabilities of flight closer to the ground (this is also considered proposing it was fx preying insects just above the waters) (Agosti-Anton, 2002, p. 32-33). From the bit later period (about some tens of millions years later) in the Miocene prehistoric fossil record, similar specialization in between the ancient bat species is found, fx in their species wing proportions. Early Miocene bat (T. stehlini) likely was species adapted to high altitude and high-speed flight, and also it with most likehood emitted ultrasounds through open mouth during its flight (ie laryngeal echolocation). For comparison there's another species, a Miocene bat which was more adapted to flight at lower heights, Hipposideros bouziguensis, but it appears also to resemble the modern leaf-nosed bats in some other features too (having had similar hollow nasal area in the skull., where the leaflike nose appendages would have fitted. Also it had other features resembling modern bats, fx the hind limbs permitting hanging free during rest). So, it seems/appears mentioned that well-preserved fossils from this species clearly shows similarities in structure to the extant leaf-nosed bats (Agosti-Anton, 2002, p. 100-103). Because these morphological features (in bats skull) are believed to have served the purpose to focus and concentrate the sound waves emitted from bats nostrils, it would seem very likely that also such echolocation cababilities were well developed in some bats at that time already. Also, the extant (leaf-nosed) bat species usually have sharper echolocation (fx, they the have capability to detect thinner wires or ropes when in flight.) So - on the basis of this information available us - sharper echolocation perhaps would have developed on some of these bats (in their preferred lower flying habitat) from the need of more agile sensing of obstacles. Also, it could have evolved parallel with the development of their wings for specialized flight, even though our conclusions are only reasoned on the basis of limited information and general assumed views , perhaps.


Leaving these evolutionary histories aside that likely appear (for us here) a bit too complex in these brief conclusions; and we can instead mention a popular anecdote relating to bat echolocation - or, how this capability for ultrasounds first was found (not yet fully recognized and understood at the time) - the honour can be pointed for the 'unprejudiced' 18th century bishop, mathematician and naturalist Lazaro Spallanzani (1729-1799). Spallanzani first 'proved' experimentally that bats don't need vision for their navigation. That he did by covering the eyes from several bats and then letting them fly around in the dark at the attic. For attic ceilings he had tied some wires that contained bells. To Spallanzani's surprise the "blinded" bats didn't ring those bells, but when their ears were covered this of course happened (as the bats, deprived of their sixth sense, echolation, inevitably flew to the wires) – But, with the highest credibility this likely was not the origin for the common English saying "Bats in the attic".

Complete understanding from bat echolocation developed only some 150 years later, after the invention of sonar in early 20th century. Until that (or close to) it was believed that bats navigated with their sharp night-vision (which has given grounds for the use of bat wings and other body-parts in all kinds of magic potions/witches brews and healing juices or other such practices that seem equally harmful misconception). In the same instance – for the fun of it - we can also be reminded from an another misleading saying; "Blind as bat", which also in fact is double wrong, as the bats eyes are in fact adapted for both daytime and night-vision. They have similarities in their vision to other mammals (bats do have dichromatic colour vision, they have something called rod receptors needed in the night vision and cone receptors for daylight, and even have sense of some UV-light, or about so). (Perhaps there's more variability in between the species in that, as the source appears to mention research carried on the study of some flower visiting species of bat.) Anyway, usually the microbats are merely believed to rely on their echolocation sense, but do need their (night) vision fx when leaving or arriving their roosting sites (and therefore, naturally their vision is better adjusted for that nightly condition).


Many microbats, especially the ones that inhabit the colder hemispheres often are found to hibernate - this being from the reason that they are forced to pass over winter times by some way since inwinter there's not enough prey (insects) available. Bats can control their body temperature, and often they pass over the winter time by 'reducing their thermometer' (lessens the amount of energy needed during that time). In the case of bats this includes lot of variation, fx each species has a particular temperature and the site chosen for hibernation; also, all bats need rather high conditions of humidity in the place of their hibernaculum to prevent dehydration – which often causes hibernating bats being covered by drops of dew (Schrober-Grimmberger, p. 57-59). Differing from many other mammalians that hibernate, bats even sometimes wake up (and move, eat, etc) occasionally during that time, but a hibernating bat shouldn't be disturbed ; Regaining their normal body temperature takes about 30-60 minutes and the lower the animals energy reserves are, the longer that wakening process will be. (Ibid., p. 63-64). The hibernation periods can vary a lot and they can last from few days to several months. In the colder regions they less commonly are adjusted for to wake up during the colder period, since there's no prey available. Of course all this also causes a lot stress for bats physical strength. In bad weather conditions many new-born die, but also even during the normal winters (youngest bats usually) survival is in the highest risk. Also, many species are found to hibernate in groups.

On the basis that the bats don't fall for complete uninterrupted 'sleep' through the cold season, it would seem like they wouldn't be as vulnerable for the Climate Change effect as some other small mammalians that hibernate – but, without better knowledge and not having with this kind of scheduel any reliable information searched for – we'll forced to leave that question open in this text. In any case the bats seek for their hibernation places where temperatures and relative humidity in the air are stable enough (largely reason for the popularity of caves in that, likely). Some species, similar to birds and butterflies, also migrate, often for distances over 1000 km. Migrating doesn't prevent the bats from also hibernating.



After these various bat details and stories, some words next devoted for the Megachiroptera, or, specifically the Pteropus group, which consist from the bats usually called as flying foxes (name originates from their usual looks, snout resembling that of the fox – but many of the species also have large wingpans). They mainly appear on tropical regions, being widespread in the South-East Asian rainforests mostly, but elsewhere too. Instead of echolocation these bats have other highly developed senses, fx the sense of smell and especially the vision. Many of these bats visits flowers in search of their nectar and other juices, for which purpose they probably have developed advanced UV-vision (and with that they better can locate fx the plants they frequently visits for nutrition). The feeding preferences of these bats also give them an important role in the spreading of various forest plants; Bats eat fruits and spit the seeds out, which is effective mechanism in the seeds dispersion. Some bats fly large distances in search of the food, even about 30 km (or more). Also some, usually smaller species, are important agents of pollination for the forest plants similarly as some birds during day-time. The flowers they visit usually are cream-white from colour and do have smell of mysk; the bats carry pollen that clings in their fur from one flower to an another. Plants/trees that rely on bat pollination include various rain forest species. (pic ; a Fruit bat feeding)




In spite of the large number of species in their family tree - there's 175 at least (and the Pteropodidae, in addition to flying foxes, includes variety of fruit eating bats or even some with more varying diets). But many from them have become threatened. Fx in Malaysia (and various adjacent countries) they are found endangered, but also many flying foxes that have ranges limited to (some) islands/pelagic have been in decline. We can here briefly pick a list – purely random choices - from some better-known species ; threatened species from (tropical) islands include Samoa Flying-fox (Pteropus samoensis, NT), Ryukyu Flying fox (Pteropus dasymallus, NT), Comoro Black Flying-fox (Pteropus Livingstonii, CR) [Surprisingly a search by name of species didn't return us much usable summaries from species mentioned, but anyway...]. As these better known ones only cover species from which rather lot data has been collected, they mainly represent larger frugivorous bats. But there's also less common and smaller species, endangered and also some believed extinct. The usual threats nowadays concerning the bats of the tropical region are most usually habitat destruction, most common being the deforestation and conversion of forests to agricultural purposes (fx it was in some instance mentioned from the Philippines original old-growth forest cover about 90 per cent been lost) ; as well the hunting of animals, and increase of human settlements on their habitat are mentioned as main reasons for the on-going decline. In most of these countries, though, the variety of existing species is rather more diverse than in some other parts of the world, but fx from the mentioned Philippines also number of other very particular animal species are found endangered. Often that also appears as result from the habitat fragmentation.



The first selected species here, Seychelles Sheath-tailed bat (Coleura Seychellensis) is from the smaller bats, from which many are endemic to certain islands. The species is currently found on only one island (Seychelles being an archipelago, consisting from group of smaller islands) – it used to be numerous in the past, and still in 1980s had populations on few more small islands close by. Nowadays they're estimated to consist from lot smaller population than around that 250 mature individuals, which (ao) can make that few enough to cause species classified as Critically Endangered. For their dietary habitats these microbats require availability of diverse, natural forest which can support abundant insects, especially moths and beetles. Therefore, the destruction of their original habitat coastal lowland forest being cleared, likely has been the main reason for their decline. Also, other possible threats mentioned affecting for that are fx the introduced Barn owls and feral cats. Invasive plants also, having reduced the availability of their beetle prey, etc. As for the better and for more information, according to Edge's listing (mammals list) there's conservation efforts carried on the Seychelles Sheath-Tailed bat (not the case being so on every threatened bat species, but perhaps in this case might have prevented the complete disappearance).



Our second exemplary species is also islander. More precisely the New Zealand Lesser Short-Tailed bat (Mysticina tuberculatis) which also is one from only two endemic mammalians found on New Zealands nature, the other one being also bat (/or that was the larger Mysticidae species, M. robusta, which still existed around the mid last century but is now believed extinct). Mysticidae bats appear in some ways exceptional, since the surviving bat is also one from only two bats in the world that do maintain movement and hunt for prey on the forest ground (It spends almost half of its active time as ground-dweller). The other 'walking bat' is the Vampire bat, (Desmodus rotundus) , found only in parts of South-American continent.



The (Mysticidae) bats likely evolved in Australian nature from where a resembling fossil is known (Icarops) and the species mentioned is therefore likely very ancient. The terrestrial movement of the Lesser Short-Tailed bat also has been suggested as the reason for its diet including broader range of foods than any other bat. It eats nectar, flowers and fruit, also various terrestrial invertebrates, fx spiders. However, terrestriality is not believed to have evolved as result from New Zealand lacking (mammalian) predatory species , since mystacinidaes are believed to have existed even before their arrival for the New Zealand nature (time of arrival is of course known from only fossil founds). Preceding that, in the Australia's prehistoric nature these bats (likely) co-existed with the various (nocturnal) predators – including (ao) various marsupial carnivores, carnivorous/omnivorous kangaroos, predatory bats (megadermatidae) (Bird and reptile predators also mentioned in that article). In New Zealand forests the species, also, is believed to have appeared abundant preceding human arrival and diminished as consequence from the original forests been largely reduced. (As well, number of alien mammals having become established, which has been during about 750 years). Disappearance of suitable wet cooler rainforest habitat is believed as the likely reason for the Australian mystacidae species gone extinct sometime during earlier prehistory at least about 10 Mya (= Million years ago), that having caused also various other mammalian species loss as result of climate changes (in during) from early- to mid- Miocene. (“Bats That Walk”, 2009). Mysticidaes, here presented, lasted for the current days only because the species had become established in NZ nature preceding that.

But, likely the interested reader may find more information/also other studies from it than the source we're referring ;(there also is stated fx that “Rather, it would seem that walking is rare in bats because it has advantages for them only in special circumstances.[…], the rich rainforest environment in which the ancestors of the mystiacinid bats evolved in ancient Australia was teeming with ground-based competitors and predators.”) And, this would perhaps give also much grounds for various speculations about bat evolution... but again we'll have to leave that for the mention, since according to known it merely represents an exception for the general rule.


These few particular species briefly presented only show the multitude of bat species in existence, and – on the other hand – similarly their decline largely also converges with the loss of ancient forests and their eco-systems. Like the preceding species various bats have ancestral past and also it truely is so (we can be reminded that) the bats have remained largely unchanged through their evolutionary prehistory. They are therefore often mentioned holding some noteworthy clues from those evolutionary pasts But, likewise we've noticed from all of this, they also have important place in the ecology, especially as particular nocturnal (group of) species.



All this kind of brings us again for that shifting baseline2. , mentioned in early paragraphs of this text. In the northern hemisphere where disappearance of those original 'old-growth' forests happened in somewhat earlier times, some bat species were still in the recent times found 'regular' inhabitants in the human buildings during these recent historical times (fx in those attics). Modern construction techniques and the spread of urban environments – to the contrary - have largely reduced these favored old buildings (the old churches present important exceptions, as was also noticed). On the other hand there's species living in the ceilings of city buildings and as well the largest European bat 'hibernaculum' is in Poland (Nietoperek) where they live (in tens of thousands) at the large concrete tunnel habitats, human built during the Second World War. Nevertheless the bats of the northern hemisphere are found species needed protected, in most countries. Already from that couple decades old Schrober-Grimmberger book (Guide to Bats ,1989), we find bats mentioned in noticeable decline because of the modern developments (; particularly noticed are the reduction of their food sources by use of pesticides and the increased poison levels in bats as other result from that. Also, the destruction of their natural landscapes and habitats, demolization/destruction of roost sites, as well as the unfavourable weather conditions in form of the longer cold and wet spells in during spring and summer times)(Schrober-Grimmberger, p 73-74). In conclusion, bats are nightly mammals and there's about mentioned thousand differing species in existence worldwide. Also, as noticed they show great adaptivity for very different environments and even human built structures. But - to the contrary of some still very abundant species - there's larger number of the threatened.



From the same reasons, I notice my own early memoirs actually presenting a lucky coincidence; It appears a rare 'knot' and joining point in the two different paths, separated by that shifting baseline. Or, in other words, could have been an exceptional random coincidence that sometimes breaks that 'uniform amnesia' in the current (prevailing) form of culture, that creeps everywhere within the process christened with the term 'urbanization'. To the contrary - they say it can sometimes be stopped, or at least slowed down. And also - the bats in these sentences were found culturally very important animals. Simply from the reason they are of help to memorize past things (not the least my own memoirs).

Notes:


1. Various (molecular-, DNA-) studies, also one referred here, make arguments on behalf of more complex division than this traditional one. Fx, it seems proposed to including False Vampire bats (Megadermatidae) and some other bats in the larger main order (Rhinolophoidea) at Megachiroptera , as well Sheath-tailed/Sac winged bats also placed in the Megabats lineage. (The rest of bat families merely belonging for their traditional placing in classification.) Since the purposes of this text are rather more various, we can leave these for the mention and likely these (classifications) still appear little changing in time.



2. And, no matter how related to that (or even not at all), anyway, we also find few more interesting sentences to mention from that European bat guide – a book we've been referring a lot in the preceding text - since there reads: "[...] the fact that different bat species start to emerge at different times is reflected in the old literature, even in the naming of the bats. The noctule, for instance, was called the 'early flying-bat' whilst the serotine was referred to as the 'late-flying bat'.” (Schrober-Grimmberger 1989, p. 31) Perhaps not quite that exiting in the variety of bat phrases and terms, but yet interesting and actually I think it quite well combines these cultural histories from bats and thoughts presented in few concise words (from this point-of-view.)

Cooking Companion V : Sunflower Meals


In cookings and recipes post this time we'll have non-vegetarian meals, like was promised in the preceding one. However, mushrooms make the third selected meal since their use is rather limited in the modern house-hold cooking.

The main uniting element in these meals is Sunflower seeds, which I recently noticed not only healthy but also tasty (they can be added for salad, eaten as such, etc). Also, we of course favor organically grown food, and fx for salt recommended is using the Sea salt, it's containing all the minerals and so on...In overall, we won't mind too much if it would out-compete other methods of production out the business - since there's plenty of salt in the seas and it can even be used for human necessities...So:


Chicken on Beans


Ingredients: Some already cooked rice (1-2 dl), pepper slices, green beans, 1 garlic glove, some salt, curry (½ tsp), cinnamon, (olive) oil, sunflower seeds, chicken in preferred parts (wings, legs, etc)


Easily and quickly prepared: Some oil on the (oven-)pan, place for it the bean and pepper slices, rices and add the spicing. Over that the chickens parts and add on them ½ dl olive oil (can also add some ½ – 1 dl white wine), little water. Lastly, add sunflower seeds within and cook in the oven about 200 C. (Additionally mushroom slices can be used).


Fishin'n'Fushin


Ingredients: Sunflower seeds, (olive) oil, lemon, salt, white wine (if wish), some fish, amount according to number of eaters and prepared before (I used perch, but also white fish goes well, fx)


Since the fish often tastes better without too much preparations, just pour some oil for the pan and add the lemon juice.(alternatively/usually its squeezed on the fish pieces). Fry the fish for some time, turn the fillets over few times and add some salt (½ tsp). Add some sunflower seeds in the same pan (if wish add some white wine too) and take the fish for separate serving plate (frying time about 4-8 minutes, varying). Then place the (slightly) fried sunflower seeds over fish. I also made some some shrimp/dill sauce for it, but it's better without, actually.



Mushroom Delicatessen

Mushrooms (according to the preferences; from market / self-collected, but if so make sure to be in proper knowledge from the ones to use, since some are poisonous and can be even lethal). Next I usually prepare them with my Grandma's old recipe:
Mushrooms are sliced to smaller pieces (spoiled parts not included, of course) and mildly fried in some butter, little wheat flour added and small sliced onion, then fried few minutes. Add some warm milk/cream and bake in the pan (for 4-6 minutes), some water if needed (salt and white pepper as spices). Using cream makes it rather more sauce, which can be served fx with potatoes. Making that for the soup gives best results, but one needs rather plenty mushroom for that. But its good and tasty.(Sunflower seeds served on the same plate / pour them over the prepared ready soup).
